Carol Whittington acts as the Senior Vice President of the Ascension Leader Institute and as Executive Director for the Ascension Leadership Academy. She provides executive leadership for talent stewardship and organizational development and learning within Ascension’s Human Resources ministry-wide function (Ascension).
The Interventional Radiology department at St. John Medical Center is partnered with Tulsa Radiology Associated which is comprised of 22 board certified radiologists that offer an extensive array of services. The Interventional Radiology department offers a wide range of services ranging from palliative care, emergency and trauma services, and outpatient services. The department offers many different imaging modalities including ultrasound, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and fluoroscopic procedures. A few of the procedures offered include therapeutic procedures, intracranial mechanical thrombolysis, intravascular embolization, intravascular angioplasty and stent placement.
Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute was formed in 2016 as a partnership between St. John Health System and the Tulsa Cancer Institute. The radiologists from Tulsa Radiology Associates also perform their services at OCSRI. OCSRI is a physician-owned clinic that offers physicians with more than 20 blood and cancer specialists and a team of over 200 employees. OCSRI has teamed up with MD Anderson Cancer Network has teamed up with Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute to advance the treatment of cancer in Oklahoma. OCSRI is the first and only certified MD Anderson Cancer Network in the state. The OCSRI doctors have adopted many treatment plans and practices developed by the team at MD Anderson which is bringing a whole new type of care to cancer patients in Oklahoma. OCSRI underwent clinical reviews and rigorous evaluations of its medical oncology program, radiation oncology program, diagnostic imaging and pharmacy as a part of the evaluation process (OCSCRI). With regular peer reviews and treatment collaboration, some of the best cancer expertise is now close to home at Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute (OCSRI).
The Interventional Radiology department is managed by Phil Ames, who is the Director of Radiology and Annette Friend, the manager of Interventional Radiology including Centralized Scheduling, who does all the scheduling for the IR department. They not only are in charge of St. John Medical Center Radiology, but the whole radiology department for St. John Health System. As a team, they oversee all the operations involved with Interventional Radiology, from the daily operations, productivity efficiency, audits, labor relations, and accreditation inspections. Phil and Annette work hand in hand with the team lead of Interventional Radiology, Mindi Plumlee. Mindi Plumlee is in charge of running the daily operations including daily staff huddles, training staff, establishing department goals and procedures. She facilitates in conjunction with Phil, Annette, physicians, and the staff of the Interventional Radiology department. The administrative team is very open with the staff and encourages a positive outlook towards team work and job performance.
Many studies have been performed to analyze leadership behavior, and how their behaviors effect their subordinates. In one study, Kerr and Jermier, proposed a taxonomy to explain how different types of contextual variable affect the leader’s influence on subordinates. They suggested that some contextual variables act as substitutes for the leader’s influence and other tend to neutralize the leader’s influence in a particular work situation (Sheridan). They determined less leadership direction has a positive motivational effect on subordinates (Sheridan). In a separate study, two findings have examined the relationship between leadership behavior and power variables in the same predictive model of leadership influence. The predictive relationships indicate that the leader’s behavior has varying effects on the work environment as evidenced by the inverse relationships with job tension and terminations, but concurrently had an inverse relationship with staff performance.(Sheridan, Vredenburgh).
Having a respectful and understanding leader reflects in the positive daily working environment and how the staff feels as if they are not just subordinates, but included in the organization on a higher level. President of Harbor Health System, Prell, has developed the master key of objectives, standards and strategies for his organization. “The plan for my position provided complete integration. I cascaded it to all levels of the organization so that people knew where they fitted in the overall picture and how they worked well with others. Each person then saw what he or she must do to help accomplish our overall plan” (Allen). The key to establishing a successful organization starts at the top of the totem pole. In order to have the run-of-the-mill staff feel included and incorporated in the organization, starts with respectable leaders.
Joseph Cacchione, MD, FACC is the President of Ascension Medical Group. He is responsible for developing a culture of high performance dedicated to improved health outcomes and an excellent provider and patient experience. Jason Alexander, FACHE, provides strategic and operational leadership while promoting alignment along facilities within his Ministry Market and with the System Office on issues related to Mission and Vision. Some of the biggest missteps Fuller sees is the lack of leaders with experience in risk management and other value-related sets, bloated board structures that don’t allow hospitals to change swiftly, and a dearth of outcomes-related data needed to drive change (Stempniak). In a study that determines if leadership instability was associated with sociopolitical structures between the board and CEO, it was determined the greater the influence the CEO has over the board and its decision making, the less likely those decisions will reflect adversely on top management and, consequently, the lower the level of leadership instability (Jeffrey).
The team in the Interventional Radiology department at St. John Medical Center seemed to mesh well together and everyone knew what their role was. The subordinates felt like they could go to their upper level management and discuss any issues they may have had. All of the staff seemed to love their job and the organization so I would be happy to work for this organization after graduation. An organization of this size depends on the behavior of everyone in the organization to be able to function properly without any major setbacks. There is no standard approach to developing a positive leadership and management based organization , however, it is important to have a plan and provide an optimistic outlook.
