I enjoyed reading your discussion post. You did a good job giving your opinion on Volkswagens scandal. The examples you provided were solid and you demonstrated that you understood the topic. You fully examined and explained the ethical, spiritual and legal aspect of this case. While I do agree with you on some things, I disagree with you on some as well. I do agree that it is the engineers fault, but I feel that this issue could have been caught.
Some things do not add up and this issue could have been fixed if inspections had of been more thorough. I agree with what you said you would do in regards to being in charge of the legal department. If I was the leader in this department I would have been paying more attention to the production. Leadership is about setting the right example and making a difference in people’s lives. You do not have to do great things to make a difference.
Honesty, tell the truth no matter what, respect, punctuality, not judgmental, just, humble, and dignity can be international code of ethics every leader should follow (Alahmad 2010).
It is important for the engineers to pay close attention to all details since they are who installed the software. If the managers had of paid closer attention it could have prevented the installation. The engineers could have done what was in their best interest by not installing the software and therefore would have a better relationship with the managers.
As Christian, we are not supposed to do any act that could be dishonorable or unbiblical. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24, New International Version).
The engineers are not the only one to blame, the leaders have an important role in decision making. Making money should not always be the main goal, a company should always be ethical. Corporate social responsibility has been added to the growing list of demands that investors, customers and employees present to companies. (Argenti, 2016). The protection of the consumers is key. So, when manufacturing vehicles, the choice of software should be chosen wisely. It is important that our leaders lean on the Lord and surround themselves with people who think like them. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:11, ESV). At the end, I think that most importantly, the leaders themselves must have a strong sense of ethics. Which can help them develop the right culture for their cooperation.
