“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence”- Vince Lombardi. It is this dictum that urged me to think higher and adhere to my interests right from a young age. As a Bangalorean, I have grown up amid the constant churning of technology, where it leaps out of the confines of the desk of a scientist or a Computer engineer and starts seamlessly integrating into every aspect of human experience. Thus from an adolescent age, I had realized the power of the computer, which would bring about a drastic change in our society, business, and economy, although I had not much knowledge about software and programming.
Every professional today who is desirous of carving out a niche for himself has to arm himself with the intrinsic knowledge of the dynamics of a global market. To get there, a pre-requisite is an education that combines engineering expertise with computer science skills. A famous adage says, “If you think education is expensive, then try ignorance”.
I completely acknowledge this. Research is indeed fundamental to amass data and formulate theories, but it is just as important to know how to implement those theories and employ that data in the real world. Therefore to be competent and competitive I will require a master’s degree. The desire to forge ahead in the field of Computer Science by doing cutting-edge research has motivated me to pursue graduate studies. I believe that a master’s degree will enable me to gain the knowledge that is the need of the hour.
Computers have always fascinated me. I believe that they truly represent the absolute outcome of man’s innovative thinking, a result of individual drops of brilliance collectively forming the ocean of Computer Sciences which I think, holds the key to deciphering the workings of the universe that encompass us. My obsession with computers started in secondary school when I got to learn HTML. The power of scripts to display contents over a webpage and make it accessible through the internet caught my attention. The fundamental introduction to the C programming language, the potentiality of basic constructs, and their functionalities excited and motivated me to explore more. In my school days, I excelled in Mathematics and Science, having consistently topped in various competitive examinations in this field. I have given outstanding performance in the 2nd nationwide interactive math Olympiad (N.I.M.O), 13th International Mathematics Olympiad, and the 13th National Science Olympiad by being in the top 10% of the students nationwide. All these had developed a keen interest in science and convinced me to choose it as my career after completing high school with a CGPA of 9.6 on a scale of 10.
My superlative performance in Physics (P), Chemistry (C), and Mathematics (M) in 12th Grade bought me a step closer to realizing my goal. I scored 95% in PCM (Physics-97/100, Chemistry-100/100, and Mathematics-93/100). My aptitude for science galvanized in me a spirit required to crack the toughest examination of its kind, the Common Entrance Test (CET). With diligence and determination, I cleared this examination and secured admission to Bangalore Institute of Technology (affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University, VTU) regarded as a premier institute in the state and country. The perfect blend of academic excellence and logical thinking, combined with an interest in programming led me to choose the field of Computer Science for my undergraduate degree.
Academics have always been my stronghold. My inquisitive personality and a strong desire to instill the fundamental principles and techniques of any subject of study were the impetus for my excellent academic record. Furthermore, it has imparted to me the methodology of scientific inquiry as reflected in my meticulous and analytic approach to problem-solving. The excellent course structure of VTU has given me a sound and broad conceptual basis with a strong and comprehensive background in Computer Science. The curriculum included the basics of several courses in diverse domains such as Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Structures, Computer Organization and Design, Systems Programming, Theory of Computation, etc. I have always believed that a subject is understood better when one sees an abstract theory being realized by a practical system. Various demanding laboratory courses and projects in the curriculum have provided me with a better understanding of Computer Science. All of these contributed to my growing interest in computer systems, which is evident from my exceptional performance in under graduation course.
My eagerness to do things uniquely made me explore the latest technologies in choosing my final year project topic. As a part of the project, I. In this way, our solution would overcome the limitations of a traditional out-of-step relay, which often. The project earned me a score of 199/200. It gave me good experience and confidence in implementing challenging projects in a restricted time frame. It has also given me an understanding of the theoretical, experimental, and computational skills required in Computer Science. The literature survey involved exposed me to the fundamental concepts and understanding of the various developments done in this field. It further spurred me to broaden my perspective in the ever-expanding field of Computer Science. I also delivered a seminar on “, which was highly appreciated by my professors for having incisive knowledge and thus gained a perfect score.
I have always believed that sound fundamentals are vital for academic advancement and the sparking of creativity. Driven by a desire to further hone my skills in the field of Computer Science, I attended certification courses on ‘JAVA and ‘HTML’ from NICT Computer Education, Bangalore, and completed them in the distinction division with a Grade A. The former course strengthened my skills in sections spanning. The JAVA course focused on the solved assignments. The HTML course concentrated on hands-on experience.
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day-in, and day-out” – Robert Collier. I truly believe that success does not come with a sudden jump. It comes to those who crawl, develops the required strength to walk, and then proceed to run. It is the hard work necessary to produce results, perseverance necessary to move through futile periods, learning, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning that becomes extremely crucial. These are the few things whose value I understood during my undergraduate studies and my attempt to inculcate these qualities in myself has been quite successful.
The skills that I had acquired so far were more than enough, to land me some of the coveted jobs in the industry. By the time I completed my engineering, I had multiple offers for employment and I chose to start my career with Infosys Limited, one of the leaders in the IT industry. I have been working at the company for a year now. The first six months at Infosys were dedicated to a rigorous training program in both fundamental concepts of computer science and deeper learning in the subfield of data warehousing concentrating on. This learning was centered on working with real-life problems and finding efficient and optimized solutions to them. I have been awarded the ‘High performer’ award for my remarkable performance in the training with an overall score of 83%. Later in my first project, I was part of a team that designed, developed, and maintained an internal automation tool. As a result of my excellent contribution to this tool, I was allowed to handle yet another automation tool, which I am currently working on. My time at Infosys to date has not only increased my knowledge but has also fuelled my thirst to learn more. I possess industry-hardened skills in Computers and have developed an insight into project handling. However, I must build on these to achieve my goal of undertaking cutting-edge research in advanced computing, with specific references. I thus believe that a return to the academic world would help me achieve my goal.
I strongly believe that continuous learning is the key to growth. Any higher education sharpens our thinking sensibilities, which in turn enhances our creativity and enables us to be more constructive. The significance of graduate study on a comprehensive understanding of a specialized area is an optimal way of making a student capable of reaching the frontiers of knowledge in a subfield quickly and keeping acquainted with the latest developments. I believe it is now the right time to expand my horizons and methodically learn the concepts. I possess determination, scholarly intelligence, and readiness to set out on this exhilarating and strenuous path, to do justice to an intensive Graduate program. I also bring along a strong grasp of fundamentals in Computer Science, a zest for challenges, and an enthusiastic appetite for learning. I believe the course will equip me with the tools and knowledge to better understand modern challenges and participate in decision-making. The classroom would provide me an exposure to a cosmopolitan atmosphere and interaction with others would give me a chance to learn more about different cultures and ways of life and an opportunity to showcase mine to the world.
Five or six years from now, I see myself as part of a leading research group, contributing my bit to the field of Computer Science to bring out innovations for the future. Over the past five years, I have become convinced that the path toward this goal will involve leveraging my current skills and abilities to improve my understanding of systems and concepts. A master’s in Computer Science is therefore a natural first step toward this goal. Thirty years down the line I want to be able to look back at the accomplishments of my life and feel a sense of satisfaction, the satisfaction that comes from making a significant impact in my field.
