In today’s world, one of the growing debates in the legalization of marijuana. Many may assume that the usage of marijuana, or cannabis, is dangerous, but it can be the exact opposite. Whether it be for medical or even recreational weed has become a part of this world. In 2015, the total amount of deaths caused by marijuana still remains at zero, yet it is classified as a Schedule I drug and is said to be more dangerous than alcohol. Though marijuana has yet to lead to a fatal overdose in the U.
S., it does have to potential to be abused and lead to dangerous behaviors like driving while high, but taking too much will likely lead to a really bad trip. I believe that every state should at least legalize it for personal use and for medical purposes. It contains properties that can help those with certain medical conditions find relief. If marijuana were to be legalized, it could potentially lower crime rates, the amount of arrests made in each state, and the amount ofmoney that the government has to spend on prisons.
The United States needs money, and legalizing marijuana is one way to get it. It’s no more dangerous than any other drug nor as harmful as alcohol. Citizens who believe otherwise think marijuana will hurt today’s society simply because of the fact that it’s an illegal substance labeled as an addictive/gateway drug. Although that may be true, it’s not as addictive as most media outlets would lead you to believe.
Society says that marijuana is bad for young people. Ones who agree to that statement are ones who used toor haven’t indulge(ed) in those activities while in their youth. We, the Millennials, have by far the highest percentage rate of any age group in the past decade with 68% in favor of legalizing marijuana use. Regarding the authority of each party, one reasonable demand that both proponents and opponents can agree on is for marijuana to not be smoked in a public area where there are other people and/or children on the premises around you. From a medical standpoint, marijuana is a treatment option for any number of medical problems. The studies on its health benefits are limited due to the fact that it’s classified as a “Schedule I” substance having no accepted medicinal use and a high potential for abuse. One of the biggest positive impacts that the legalization of marijuana would produce is the reintroduction of hemp into our society, and more importantly in current times, our economy.
Hemp is a healthy plant that contains less than 1% THC and is grown for industrial use only. Stereotypes such as Most people that do hard drugs started with marijuana means that marijuana will cause you to do harder drugs” is somewhat unlikely. Every human being has their own tolerance level and can determine whether or not this is something they can keep under control out of themselves so they won’t have to go out searching for more.Law enforcement have spent thousands of hours to arresting, booking and imprisoning marijuana smokers, many of whom obey the laws of society. Some suspects have spent over a decade in prison, in some cases for nothing more than possession of marijuana for personal use. Instead of the law enforcement simply going after the easiest drug to find nowadays, why not spend their time focusing on things that are more urgent and can have serious consequences for the arrested.
The people who are arrested for possession of marijuana intended for personal use suffer as well. Their arrests stay on their records for years, from the age of 18 & up, lowering their chances of getting particular jobs, loans, housing and benefits. When law enforcement wants a good reason to detain a suspect of marijuana use, they often give you a minor offense meaning violence, or committing a dangerous crime which doesn’t make sense. The high itself doesn’t stimulate violence in any way and there’s no real case to be made that smoking pot causes one act out. If marijuana were to be legalized, it could potentially lower crime rates, the amount of arrests made in each state, and the amount of money that the government has to spend on prisons.
