Social change in a society has been greatly impacted by technological advancements that have affected the way people communicate. Pertaining to the field of business, marketing strategies have been influenced by the use of social media websites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Chatter, etc. Many companies are targeting the social media market because it is a great way for them to advertise their products to millions of people at a time. The long-term issue affecting each company is the publicity factor concerning a bad reputation because of an employee’s use of the social media profile under the company’s name.
In addition to, mal-use of a social media profile can cause the revenue, productivity, and liability of the business to be negatively affected. The real issue lies in the reasons as to why an employee would jeopardize his/her own occupation and/or the company’s name. Social networking has become a viable tool for businesses that seek to expand their company’s name and reach new customers. Because millions of people are connected daily through social networking sites, it has become a practical tool to advertise a business. Sounds great and all, but the use of a social networking profile under a company’s name comes with a lot of other concerns. Initially, it is a hefty task to fulfill because it involves a balance between business and personal pleasure.
Even though social media can be a fun, innovative way to do one’s job and connect with various different people, a bad comment, inappropriate post or claim of followers/friends on the profile can lead to law suits on behalf of the employer or employee. The workers behind the profile aren’t educated nor taught enough about the concerns of using social media as an advertising tool. Time spent on these sites is equal to money paid toward productivity.
If this time is wasted, or used incorrectly, it affects the company’s success. Employees have their work cut out for them when handling a profile because the company’s information is exposed to hackers, viruses, spams, and data/identity theft which can also cause threats to other users accessing the profile. Thus, the social networkers need to be monitored in order to prevent future problems within the company. ”The key to avoiding such issues is for the employee to be aware of the proper and smart use of social media sites, and for the employer to educate the employee with policies, strategies, requirements, expectations, and goals that the company needs to achieve in order to have an effective use of it.
A company’s human resource department should guide the employee(s) with specific job descriptions of rules, plans, and procedures on how to correctly set up a social media profile, what e-mail should be used, the type of logos and names that should be used of the company (if any), and what he/she can or cannot post on that profile. This gives the worker(s) a clear explanation of what he/she has to do. The most important type of education when it comes to tackling social media is training. Employees should be exposed to opportunities in which they can attend workshops/seminars and learn as much as they can from experts on how to effectively and efficiently use social media websites. Apps can also be introduced to employees where tutorials are given on how to use another social media application.
This can be utilized on the worker’s spare time. Also, employees should take the initiative to stay on top of news headlines with articles regarding technology and the social media. It’s an intelligent way to learn and prevent from committing a future mistake. In a 2008 Industry Report on Training, statistics showed a 3 percentile (being the lowest) in desktop application training. This conveys the lack of information that employees possess based on what their company is offering. A company should also instill social media policies to its employees; monitoring access on the job and providing with security software. Training employees leads to an enhancement in their experience and creating awareness about issues in the social media.
