The Lord of the Rings Movies were filmed in Wellington, New Zealand. These movies were extremely high in popularity, and almost everyone loved them. Wellington became extremely popular, and to this day, the hold large festivals celebrating the release of the Lord of the Rings movies (Sibley 7, 14-17).These movies are based of the three-book franchise, by J.R.R. Tolkien, who has written other books about Middle Earth as well(Sibley 9-13). Due to the success of these movies, people obviously made great features and effects, behind the scenes.
The Lord of the Rings movies are movies about fantasy creatures, some like humans, who are on a quest to save Middle Earth, a Fantasy World from a sorcerer named Soron. He created a ring that had powerful effects, and he planed/plans to use it to conquer Middle Earth. The movies are directed by Peter Jackson, a resident of Wellington, who has directed many zombie movies throughout his life. People chose to make this movie because the books were very popular, and had a huge success rate, so they thought they might get successful too(Sibley 7-20).
Clearly, these movies were created for a good reason, but how did they make it so good?
The Lord of the Rings movies are really popular due to special effects, so let’s look at one of the best. Shelob appears in the beginning of the third book, and movie, and is a creepy spider based off of Peter Jackson’s own fears(The Secrets…).
This spider was made all out of scraps found in the workshop used to make props for the movies, such as leather, styrofoam, and small amounts of CGI. The face was the hardest part, but the builders managed to mold a plastic one, and they used some amounts of CGI to patch it up visually. Shelob is based off of a funnel web spider, because Peter Jackson suggested it. His greatest fear are funnel web spiders, so that’s what they made, for their goal was to make her as creepy as possible. The movement of this spider was controlled by puppeteering, some CGI, and small amounts of robotics (The Secrets…).
Orcs in Lord of the rings are some of the most important creatures to the plot, for they are one of the things that Soron plans/planned to use in his quest to conquer Middle Earth. These creatures are much like goblins, and are born within Mordor, with the help of magic. These creatures would appear throughout the lord of the Rings books all the time, and were the main opponent fought, same goes for the movies. Orcs were played by actors, and didn’t involve any amount of CGI. The people would be covered in mud for texture, and professional makeup artists helped make their faces scary, with the help of plastic and rubber ears, noses, etc. (insert text). The homes and castles of orcs were created as miniatures, from which professionals took years to make out of metal and plastic scraps in the workhouse (insert text).
The Lord of the Rings movie franchise took years to make, and used much hard work from dedicated workers. These movies were created because of the books’ major success, but did they get their wish to be popular as well? Yes, these movies were a huge hit, and were loved by the public for years on end, and still are (insert text).
