Habituation & Relative Size in Lord of the Rings

When it comes to sensation, our brains have a lot of data it has to pull in. The specific organs that take in these signals are called our sense organs and include the ears, eyes, nose, skin, and taste buds, Because of the sheer volumes of senses our brain is trying to process and interpret, some of the signals we receive get ignored by our brain. There are several different reasons for this One of these reasons is known as habituation.

Which is when we are so used to being exposed to the stimulus that our brains ignore it. An example of this is the sound of a fan whirring in the house. The noise is consistent and constant and so in time the brain tunes it out, only noticing it when there is a sudden change to it.

A similar process to this is sensory adaptation This is different from habituation in that it will stop processing the stimulus all together instead of being vaguely aware of it in the background.

One example of this is if one jumps into cold water. It will be freezing at first, but as the body adjusts to the temperature it begins to feel less cold, and the brain will stop interpreting it in this way This happens so that our brains can take in new information and not be distracted by the constant data coming in. The brain learns what is important and new, and doesn’t respond as strongly to a stimulus that is considered irrelevant It is also important to note that we can also be tricked by our brains.

Our senses can detect something a certain way, and we experience that stimulus a certain way and we are incorrect in interpreting that data. Some examples of this would be the use of relative size This is very commonly seen in movies in which some things are made to look bigger or smaller by placing them in a certain manner. One specific example of this was in a fairly recent movie, Lord of the Rings, in which the characters were made to look a specific height by having them stand in a certain position. There were no special effects used to alter the size of the characters.
