To know something means is taking what you learn and simply imply to your daily life. To be aware of the truth, to understand the subjects or your interests, to comprehend something throughout. When people open their minds and be open to learn and hear things from other sources, they will be able to take that knowledge and pass that knowledge to others. Everyone learns differently, it could be visual learning, or may be hands on, or using all of these things.
Visual learning is a type of learning when we analyze pictures, graphs, charts, maps and etc. and hands on learning may include learning that children or adults learn by carrying out physical activities rather than learning from lectures or watching demonstrations. Most of us claim that we know stuff and there are a lot of reasons why we believe that, over generations we pick up information and have general sense what it means than we pass that information from generation to generation.
To know something could take years, your whole life, even than it would not be enough time to learn everything.
In general, there are multiple different kinds of sources and process of knowing. Some sources we take from learning in schools as a society and others it may be learning from other people. Everyone learns from each other and take our own experience of what we hear and see, and we process all of these things and apply what we learn in our daily basis of life.
Human beings show their interest in particular things and would like to find more about the information they are interested in, therefore they will use sources such as textbooks, internet, or the information that might have been passed down from one person to another. Others know things through reasoning or logical thinking from what they may have learned previously. As mentioned before people learn mostly from each other. We open our minds to new ideas to get different perspectives that we might have not thought of before. When we open up our mind to other possibilities and ideas, we learn things from each other and about each other, and that goes the same for ourselves. The way we learn about ourselves is from experience: see what we like and what we dislike.
People learn for different reasons; out of personal curiosity, from family members, religion, schools, and etc. Everyone learns things differently and take different perspectives of something that they have learned. It’s the experience and the way you learn separates us from one another. People learn so they will be able to take the information they learned and apply it to their life. There are many reasons for learning, such as to understand/communicate with someone who speaks a different language or to learn how to do basic thigs such as cooking for survival. Most people don’t change what they learn. They expend on their learning and get new ideas and new knowledge but what they already know will always stay with them. They may get a different fresh new perspective on something and add to their knowledge that they already have. We use our knowledge to create and build our process of thinking.
There are multiple characteristics that people learn from. In schools as a child we learn how to put blocks together or complete puzzles but putting pieces together, we learn how to write, read, problem solve and etc. all of these things are common characteristics of Learning. Chronological patterns and sequence patterns are definitely used in learning, when we first starting to learn something we usually start with basic things, for example, math. When we young we learn 1+1 and etc. than over time we advance in our math skills and we combine everything that we learn from the past topics to future topics. We use sequence pattern to arrange our thoughts or math problems step by step, so we can build our knowledge. We use these skills every day of our lives starting since we were little babies, we all need guidance and process the information, so we can advance our brain and skills.
Development and learning are similar to each other, they build each other up. Meaning, maturation is a process of achieving something throughout time and development could be a process that we use learning as part of our development in life. Learning is the same as maturation because we constantly expending our knowledge and learning new things. Many of us learn how to cook from our family members and some learn how to do taxes with a help from professionals or trying to figure out on their own. Learning how to do something on your own could lead to making mistakes and having challenges, however these mistakes people make they could learn from it and for the future they can avoid repeating the same mistake and try a new way of doing something. Furthermore, there is internal and external influences in learning. Internal influences mean temperament, specific learning styles, motivation, and needs while external influences mean family, community, peers, teachers that are around a child or an adult. Internal learning is like mindfulness, it changes constantly which may change external factors like the people you may interact with which changes you again and makes you think about yourself. This is the kind of cycle that constantly repeats the action of you thinking. All of these things influence on our learning development; preference of learning styles, who teaches us or how they teach us, what information we consume, and how that information is being processed.
The way I would define childhood is being a child and in your own “little world” not worrying about any challenges in life besides having a good time as a kid. Children should be able to live free from violence, live free from fear, live free from abuse, have fun, and explore the world in your own eyes. Some children may manure faster during this period of their life depending on the environment they live in or what is “norm” childhood to that country. Some children may have/had very challenging childhoods (Personal Experience) that may affect their cognitive, social, or emotional development in the future. Each child may had/have different experience and exposure to certain things but as a parent, a teacher, or a human being that a child may cross path with it is our job to make sure all children feel that they belong (Alfred Adler, Theory of Individual Psychology).
There are multiple differences that we can tell when a child is becoming an adult. The first thing that we may notice that a child is becoming an adult is physical appearances of a child; height, weight, facial hair, puberty and etc. but besides the physical aspects we can look into developmental aspects like; knowledge, experience, process of thinking and communication. All of these things are basic factors of a child becoming an adult, but we can also look at how the child may view the world in its eyes and if the child questions the world that we live in. That’s when we can see the difference of separation between a child and adult transaction. We may see these changes with Cognitive Development, Individual Psychology, Transactional Psychology, Humanistic Psychology, Behavioral Psychology, and Developmental Psychology.
Children come to this world with a new and fresh look. They don’t know what is going to happen or how the world works or what is life for them. They need guidance from family to push them on a path to see what this life is all about, so they can create their own perspective of it. Children should explore the world, touch, taste, feel, and look at things that surround them, so they could build this knowledge when they do become adults. These standards may come from human individuals as a whole, we “created” these standards as a society from our personal experience and we pass our experience to our children and guide them to a clear path (Haidle).
Childhood is the time for children to go and enjoy the world; riding bikes, having sleepovers, playing at the park, climbing trees, playing dress up, and etc. that’s what it is like having a childhood. However, some children may not have a positive “fun” childhood, some children starting to grow up at much younger age because of their family dynamics and environment. Adults play an important role in the lives of children. They are role models and they use their knowledge to pass down to their children and guide them towards a positive direction. Adults may share some of their knowledge and skills in hopes that it will help children to discover things on their own and use these skills in their lives.
Every adult may have a special and unique relationship with a child, a parent child relationship is one of the longest relationships that a child may have in their life. Some relationships may be very serious and deep connections between a child and an adult and some relationships may have no relation at all. From personal experience, my childhood was very challenging and hard, I barely had any kind of relationship with my parents mostly because of the environment we lived in. My family all love each other but we barley spend any time together or asked ourselves how we feel about certain things or talked on the deeper level. Some children may experience these kinds of things with adults and some may create a long-lasting relationship. I believe that adults should be able to create a positive environment and be a positive influence on children. Some of the responsibilities that adults may have regarding children is to provide for them, taking care of them, support them emotionally, socially, and financially.
Depending on a child’s age, if a child is very young then the only responsibility, they may have been to explore the world and leave everything else to their parents to take care of them. If the child is of age where they are able to communicate fully, walk, and have knowledge about the world than their responsibilities may be taking care of their hygiene, have some physical activities, eat healthy foods, clean up after themselves or help clean around the house/classroom. If the child in their teen years, the responsibilities they may have all depends on the families that they are with and the environment they live in. Some children may actually go to work at the young age to help their parents with Income or have house responsibilities, homework, going to school and etc.
My professional career goal is to help children or adults during difficult times by counseling; and I’m not talking about the kind of counseling that we see in movies. People coming in with lots of money, lay on the couch, talk about their problems and then live. I’m talking about the type of counseling that I can help people by talking with them, by listening to them, working one on one with them, and believing in them. Some people do not believe in counseling and they may say it never help them, but I want to be that counselor that comes home at the end of the day and feel accomplished with people who I work with. I want to focus on families and children who are having communication difficulties with their family members, children who trying to understand themselves, and families who are going through difficult times. As a child development major, I believe that this type of profession is very important, and I think we need people who are truly there and care for children and their families in difficult times but also good times.
My goal would be to listen to people who have a lot to say about their personal life and for me to guide them towards positive direction to help them to get through obstacles in their lives. Sometimes people just want someone to listen to them and I would love to be that person for them. It is also important to make them feel comfortable to talk to you about their feelings and hard things that are happening in their life. Creating safe place for them is one of the important things in this professional. A feeling of safety is essential for mental health and well-being, but this feeling could be very hard to connect with children and families, especially those with trauma or significant anxiety.
Many therapists use animal-assistance therapy to connect with children and help them feel safe and able to have difficult conversations. This could lead to having trust relationships with animals but also with a therapist. Animal assisted therapy in counseling (AAT-C) use animals to bond and create goals for the treatment of a child or an adult. Other therapist use art as a safe bonding with children and adults. Art can calm clients and can create a peaceful environment for conversations. Art therapy can be used to treat mental health disorders and psychological distress. Many people been using art as to express themselves, communicate, and heal for a very long time. Art has become an important part of therapeutic field and is used in some assessments and treatment techniques (Cherry, 2018).
As a professional in my field, it is important to separate your feelings from the feelings when you are at your job. As a counselor you may hear some very depressing or hard things, so it’s important not to show emotions so the patient would be able to express themselves without making them feel awful telling you the information. Also, confidentiality is very important in this field of work, as a professional you need to create safe space for your patients, so they are able to talk about hard things knowing that the information would not get out of this room. Whatever is said stays in this room and is not taken out of this room. When working with families you need to create and build a safe environment for them to feel comfortable and safe to talk about challenging things in their life, if we do not have that kind of environment no one would want to come and talk about their feelings and expressing themselves.
During the course of child development, we learned about ethical systems which was very interesting, and it got me thinking of different possibilities that I hadn’t thought of before. There are 3 categories of ethical theories; Normative ethics, Meta ethics, and Applied ethics (McCartney, S., Parent, R., McCartney, & Steve). Normative ethics means when we constantly coming up with questions about how we act or speak but sometimes we are coming up with more questions than answers (Regan). Meta ethics explores moral values, status, and the study of ethical theory. Additionally, applied ethics involves applying theories to specific ideas or issues such as policies at work or organizations (McCartney, Parent, McCartney, & Steve). The philosophy that is most closely related to my beliefs is Meta ethics. I think it is important to understand what values you have and how you use these values and beliefs in any profession or field.
