The young man’s has severely after he varies on this early August morning in the nightclub. Although he has it only just managed to put his car in gear and to take the way home, but when it’s over full bladder drives into a parking lot and walk to the dumpster there, he look out of his heart against the dead eyes of a girl. While it is clear that he has to call the police, but unfortunately the battery of his cell phone is empty.
Although he still finds an open bar near where he can use the telephone, but the policeman on duty keeps him at the other end of the line for a drunken joker and it just will not believe. But Massimo, the barista , has listened carefully; the thing interested him, and he goes with the suffering auditee to beautiful young Lolita-corpse on unsavory place …
This not only takes Massimo’s everyday driving, but also of its clientele.
This is essentially his grandfather Ampelio Viviani (82) and whose three only slightly younger buddies. Whose main occupation is farsi gli affari degli altri , where also like toxic / funny / subtle / sexist / blanket / warm / stock conservative comments on today’s youth / the television / women in general / their own women in particular / help the women present in very special entertainment.
Il bar is the center of Italian life, and so happens in the Pineta, the fictional town in the province of Livorno, nothing without that in Massimo’s BarLume ; would (a nice play on words: lume lamp, light barlume, shimmer pale glow) perceived and discussed.

In caffè or aperitivo Massimo and his elders learn much from directly-affected mouth – and especially before the police in the form of dottor commissario Vinicio Fusco (35), a fussy, stilted Wichtigtuers in his office.
Massimo, 38 and divorced, has not only a knowledge but also an intelligence ahead Fusco. He observed, questioned, evaluates combined – and is the one who solves the murder of the seventeen year old Alina. The old people listen intently and comment eagerly ( Alla grazia di Derrick! ), Fusco maneuvered through, as much as possible, and the coroner Walter Carli, a friend of Alina’s family, delivers and applies his knowledge also in the BarLume . All others remain pale.
What advantages does this first novel that he has laid the foundation for the success of its author Marco Malvaldi (see table below)?
The unspectacular criminal case itself is not responsible sure. The body was found a few details about evidence and motives are gradually “revealed” in fairly extensive dialogues, repeated several times and summarized – in classic Whodunit -style; only marginally drugs and sex are mentioned. In the final pages pulls Massimo as once Hercule Poirot latest finds from the pocket and carries the pensioners retrospect resolve all puzzles before (not without recourse to Kurt Godel’s reflections on mathematical axioms!).
The people drawing does not fall on through extraordinary. Massimo is nice and sober, is pleased to provide subtle and professional, but sometimes seems too overbearing and somewhat artificial. Most of the other characters can almost pass as cartoons.
Despite (because of?) This harmlessness is the book an easy, amusing holiday reading, which take us reading in Tuscany or can accompany. It is instructive to non-Italians to us how such a bar “works” – when to come and go as you gesticulates what to cook, drink, eat, says – and what is not … The snappy vicious skirmishes of the ancients often funny, as well as some original remark the other characters and the narrator, for example, about what happens when the human mutated to motorists (page 141 et seq.). Last but not least we learn a card game know – the eponymous briscola that you would normally, but can play in cinque four evenly also; il senato ( i beneficiari INPS, la classe del ’29 – in short, the old men) teach Massimo (and the reader) the rules and strategies – and from then on va semper bene, la briscola in cinque , preferably fuori all’ombra del tiglio grande …
the book to read in Italian? Do the better only if you are reasonably fit and flexible, because your dizionario will let you down when the Vecchietti baldo wern drauflos in their dialect. Swap “l” and “r” ( Fa of [del] times a qualcuno! Te ne trovi un artro [altro] ), leave much under the table fall ( Lui ‘un ti vole [non ti vuole] ma vicino nemmen sai? quello che le riparava bicirette [biciclette] ) and the colloquial language flourishes ( cavolo, incazzarsi, mi rompano i coglioni ). Then gems emerge like this: C Cascan tutti in piedi, con quest’incapacità di intendere e di volere. Vale a di ‘che se vado in comune e Dio che quando mi sono sposato ero Brião posso anda’ ‘moglie dalla mi e Dinni di levassi dalle scatole? (p 152)
