The proscriptions of Sulla, which preceded the reactionary political legislation enacted during his dictatorship left a particularly bitter memory that long survived. Caesar left Rome for the province of Asia on the condition that he divorce his wife because Sulla would only allow him to leave on that condition. This lifestyle went on until the ransom was delivered and then the pirates fled. Caesar pursued them, caught them and killed them.

He continued on to Rhodes. When he returned to Rome, he was posted to Spain, which at the time was a Roman territory. Caesar finally had his foot in the door of Roman politics.He took up his honorary position in the senate when he returned, as the person in charge of entertainment. As this was important in Rome, Caesar took this seriously and began his campaign to be elected as consul at the next election.

When Sulla was in power he learned that a dictator can cause a great deal of horror while at the same time he can override squabbling politicians to cause real changes. During the “Social War” Caesar recognized the resentment of the Italian allies (This was caused by a lack of political influence). “From Crassus, he learned the lesson that the foundation of political influence was wealth; from Pompey and Cicero, it was obvious that military might require political skill and that effective oratory benefited from the mechanics of crowd control” (Cross). Being a fine public speaker, Caesar’s rise to power came rather quickly. By the age of 30, he was unarguably one of the most famous Romans of his time; he was skillful in the art of oration and that served him well when he campaigned for various offices.
