Hereditary, Lifelong Blood Disorder

SWBAT create a scientific research paper discussing a disorder caused by a genetic mutation and explain the impact of environmental factors.

In this lesson, I will reinforce our previous lesson on DNA extraction and mutations, and protein folding. I will also reinforce writing skills necessary for the development of a scientific research report.

The ability to construct a well written research report is an important skill and asset that a student needs in their academic and professional careers. Not only is writing important, but being able to incorporate other learned concepts and scientific language into their writing is an important skill.

Previously students have learned about DNA. Specifically, its role in genetics, structure and function. Students have also explored the expression of traits and the probability of traits being passed on from generation to generation. Students also explored the effect of the environment in the replication of DNA leading to mutations. These are all constructs students need to digest a part of the vast world of genetics.

Clear connection of content and evidence drawn from This rubric row focuses on the target of the science writing standard which is evidence. The standard is aligned to the task of the research paper. Students need to be able to support their claim on the task. Students need to be able to argue for or against a claim and use evidence from other sources to support that claim.

Students need to know how to draw conclusions and support and refute claims using evidence from multiple source.

Simply completing the questions after a lab Is not enough to prepare students in defending their findings and supporting their data.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited, lifelong, blood disorder disease. Sickle cell anemia is passed down from generation to generation. Red blood cells are normally shaped like a disk. However, in sickle cell disease red blood cells are described as “sickle-shaped” for its strange appearance also refers to as crescent shaped therefore called sickle-shaped. [1] Sickle hemoglobin is what causes the cells to develop a sickle, or crescent shape. This inherited blood disorder is one of the different types of anemia; the condition in which your blood has lower RBC’s than normal.

This disease is not something you catch like the flu. The person must be born with it by inheriting two genes for sickle hemoglobin—one from each parent. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease, however, there are treatments to improve the anemia. The treatments can help with the symptoms and difficulties of this disease in children and adults. Advances in medical treatments help people who have sickle cell anemia live longer. “First identified in 1904 by a hospital intern, sickle cell disease became, more than forty years later, the first disease found to be a genetic disease”.
