The book I chose is Handle with Care, by Jodi Picoult, This book is a fiction book about a woman named Charlotte Okeefe and Sean Okeefe, the couple wants a child and has been trying for a year, and right before she was going to try other procedures to help conceive, she became pregnant With Willow, The moment Charlotte found out about her pregnancy she was overwhelmed with excitement. On her 18 week ultrasound the transducer showed a short femur and a very unusual clear photograph of the brain.
Piper Reece, Charlottes OB/GYN and best lriend thought this was just a really good day for the sonogram machine. The next sonogram was not scheduled the Okeefes didnt want to know the sex of the baby. So one night after hours, 27 weeks pregnant, Piper and Charlotte deCIded to take a look. When piper saw a couple of broken bones and healing broken bones, she referred her care to Dr. Del Sol.
Willow was born with a bone disease Oseogenesis Imperfecta.
OI. which is a collagen defect that caused bones to be so brittle they would break with a sneeze, a fall, or a IWlSI, A defect that can be found at a early enough time In the pregnancy for the parents to decide if they want to abort or keep the child, In this case Charlotte is a Catholic and that was not an option, Although a lifetime of sorrow and pain for the child she began questioning whether or not it was the right choice.
Because she had wanted so bad to have another child it was not an option when thought at first. Not knowing what trials and tribulations the future held she brought Willow into the world. One of the issues in this book was standard of care. Because Piper was Charlotte was her best friend she should have told her at the beginning she needed to see another OB/GYN, so that emotions and ethics would not present an issue.
When Piper receives the letter that says Charlotte suing Piper for medical malpractice Piper is hurt, as would any friend. As the trial goes on Charlotte is pretty much forced to say she didnt want Willow, when she really did. She loved Willow. She wanted to be able to provide good care for Willow when she gets older and needs a sports wheelchair and a car. My favorite line in the book was how could you love somebody so much and never know them, 50 her reason for suing was she should have been told earlier, at her eighteen week ultrasound, what was going on With her baby. which at this time would have been able to see. With Charlotte being in her midr3Us Piper and the technician were looking for downrsyndrome signs, none were found.
But the techniCIan thought it was odd for the brain to be so clear, which should have thrown a red-flag in the air. The trial is very emotional including the dad Sean OKeefe, who is not by his wifes side but yet he is on the defendants side. He does not think Willow was a wrongful birth and has even filed for divorce. Willow is a bright child, even though being disabled she is full of life and love. She longed to be like her sister Amelia, and looked up to her as a role model. When Amelia starts becoming a rebellious teenage girl, she starts becoming Bulemic and cutting herself. Willow sees her doing this and ends up in the hospital because she had too much blood loss when she cut herself. She done this and said Amelia looked so happy when she saw her and wanted to feel that happiness.
Charlotte wins the eight million dollar case, and 6 months later Willow falls in a pond behind their house and dies. When the buried Willow her mom put the check in the casket because she had won the lawsuit for her. This book was outstanding; I would recommend this for this purpose because it helps understand any doctor can make a mistake. It makes you realize about what is really important and how far someone would go for the love of a child. I think, even if my religious beliefs didnt agree, if the doctor thought my child would be severely disabled I would want the choice to abort gave to me. I think Charlotte is an amazing character and Jodi Picoult is an amazing author. It was a real touching book and the Author gave you great detail, I felt like I knew the people and could feel the pain of all the characters.
