Edgar Allan Poe and Theme of Angels in Annabel Lee

In Edgar Allan Poe’s early life, he did not really know his parents, his dad left the family early on and his mom died when he was only three. Edgar was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. After his mother died Edgar had to stay with his godfather John Allan. Edgar ended up marring his 13-year-old cousin. He lost a job due to heavy drinking and after his wife died from tuberculosis he fell deeper into Alcoholism and drugs. His most famous work is The Raven.

Edgar got engaged to another woman later but died before they got married. In Edgar Allan Poe’s works have to do a lot with death or loss of a loved one (Cestre, Charles). He use’s repetition throughout almost all of his works to get his point across, also he uses rhyme.

One of Edgar Allan Poe’s works is Annabel Lee. In the begging of this work it states that a man and a woman fall deeply in love.

They loved each other so much that the angels were jealous. Later on in the poem Annabel Lee ends up dying, and the man says it’s because the angles wanted their love. At the end of the poem the man says about there is never a night that he does not dream about her. The man lays by Annabel’s grave which is by the sea.

Dark Romanticism has many traits including the supernatural. The supernatural includes forces, which is not logical.

I think he is saying the kingdom is isolated and the ocean is evil. The man says that the angels were jealous, and since they were jealous, they took Annabel Lee away from him.

It is not logical for angels to be jealous of humans. Its also not logical to blame a force for killing a loved one.

Death is a trait of dark romanticism, and there is a lot about it. In the poem it states, “That the wind came out of the cloud by night chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.” This quote shows that Annabel Lee is dead, and the man is clearly sad about it and emotion is a part of romanticism to. The man says how there is never a night that he does not dream about her. Also, at the end of the poem the man is lying by her grave.

In conclusion, Annabel Lee is about a man and a woman falling in love when they were kids. One day the angels were jealous of the love they had for each other and the woman was killed. The man was sad because he lost the love of his life, there is no night that he does not dream about her. The poem completely falls into romanticism because throughout the poem there is nature. Also, the supernatural is also in the poem, with the angels and the demons which is also not logical. There is also death which is a part of dark romanticism which made the man sad which emotion is another part of romanticism.
