Explanation of Art Project Based on Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was a well-known poet and short story author. His stories were usually written about his emotions or fears. One of his most commonly known poems was “Annabel Lee” possibly written because his wife, Virginia, who died of tuberculosis. Throughout the story, you learn that the narrator’s partner died, and you can see the heartwarming and unique type of love they had. Based on this, I drew the two characters’ love, then having it taken away by the angels who were supposedly jealous of their love.

In the first two stanzas, the imagery of a castle by the sea where the two characters share their love for each other is described. In the illustration, everything is filled with color. This represents the joy and happiness they both had. You can also see the sun shining and the water is calm which represents how when they were sharing their special bond, their love radiated all around so that everyone including the angels could see it.

Then, in the second half of the picture, you can see what is happening in stanza four to six where the angel came to get her and bring her up to heaven. This side has a gray sky, rough water, and wind.

These features show how once Annabel left, everything was out of balance. To the narrator, Annabel brought balance to his life. On the right side, there are clouds covering the sun. The angels brought the clouds so they could take Annabel with them since the angels were jealous of their love. Finally, you can see the narrator at her gravesite with no castle. Annabel was the narrator’s princess and without a princess, there would be no castle. Try to find different words other than, “You can see…”

The tone of ” Annabel Lee” is dark and sad. In the story, the narrator is in love with Annabel. They had a very special type of love. However, the narrator said, “The angels, not half so happy in heaven,/went envying her and me”. So, a high kinsman decided to take Annabel to heaven. This made the dark feeling in the poem since Annabel was gone.

In the stanza six it said, “And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side/of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride.”. He would devote all his time to stay with Annabel by her grave since that was the only place he could find happiness or balance in his’s life. To represent the tone, in the second half of my picture I used the colors black, gray, and dark blue. These represent how once there were bright colors but once Annabel died they were stripped away. resulting in only the dull or dark colors being left. The colors also show how the narrator was feeling.

In conclusion, the tone of Annabel is dark and sad due to the narrator’s sorrowful experiences. His life suddenly took an abrupt turn when his beloved Annabel died. His entire life changed, not for the better because his one and only love died. My illustration depicts all of this because of its colors and detail show how his world used to be beautiful and is now a dull, gray life full of grief.
