Sure you may think,” Oh yeah, that’s a panda that’s red.” Well if you thought this, you’re wrong. As a matter of fact, red pandas have many different qualities and looks that giant pandas don’t have. Do you know how red pandas live, look, and do plenty of other things they do in their everyday lives? Red pandas are small animals that are about the size of house cats. They measure twenty to twenty-six inches from the top of their head to their bottom, adding another twelve to twenty if you include their tail.
These little guys have white patterns on their faces along with their stunning striped tails. This makes the red pandas look like raccoons and regular pandas. The rest of their face, back, and tail are brownish-red or orange. The bottom portion of them, like their legs and stomach, are brown. Many trees in the areas where these animals live have moss that is the same color as their fur.
This works great for camouflage. for great camouflage. Red pandas have a thick coat of fur which is very soft.
Red pandas are Genus is actually called Ailurus and their species is called Fulgens. No other animals are part of this group, not even giant pandas or raccoons are part of this family. Red pandas used to be considered part of the bear group and raccoon group before they were different and got their own group. This makes them very unique and unlike many other species.
They also have nicknames like Firefox and are called lesser panda. Red pandas are found around the Eastern Himalayas which is places such as Bhutan, China, Nepal, etc. The Eastern Himalayas is a mix of an immense range of mountains and jungles. This is something that giant pandas and red pandas have in common. Unfortunately, these areas are running out of bamboo, and just like the bamboo, red pandas are doing the same.
I know this would surprise anyone but red pandas are actually omnivores. Sometimes red pandas eat small birds and their eggs. There are still many things that red pandas are hunted by like snow leopards and tigers. Luckily, red pandas have great camouflage that makes them hide in the trees (Red Panda Network) Red pandas don’t hibernate in the winter. They also don’t migrate in the winter. What they do in the winter is stay put. Red pandas do this because they can handle the cold weather. Their fur is very thick which can help them withstand the weather. This makes them pretty phenomenal animals. One thing that stinks though is that staying makes it hard to find food. Red pandas can look for hours even days trying to find some kind of food. This is one of the reasons red pandas are now endangered along. With many other reasons.
Whenever a red panda gets pregnant, it takes about three months for the mother of the babies to give birth. Before the babies are born, the mother must make the den in a tree and then in the tree make the den out of twigs. She does all this just a few days before the animal’s birth! She can have from one to five children. Red pandas are a grey color when they’re born, but after 12 to 22 weeks they turn orange and red. Before that though red pandas learn to eat regular food(like bamboo) and before that they learn to open their eyes. Red pandas eventually get older and move out of the den they lived in. They move out whenever their mother is pregnant again and are ready to go out on their own. Do you know how long red pandas live? Red pandas live to about 7 to 8 years in the wild.
This fact however may eventually become false. The red panda population is now dwindling. Over the years red pandas have lost more than 40% of their population. Why is their population decreasing? It is decreasing because of people tearing down their forests and this is leaving them homeless. People also hunt red pandas because they’re brainless people who love mugging nature for their own means. Red pandas are extremely unique. Like I’ve talked about, Red pandas have their own Genus, their own looks, and even their own family! That’s not even half of it though. Red pandas have along with their five other claws, have a sixth for climbing. They also use their long tail for balance and surprisingly even “talk to each other” when they’re in danger. Red pandas have so many unique attributes. There are still many questions that can’t be answered. Will, they will be extinct in time? Will they always be in their own family? Will we still destroy their homes even if there are less than a thousand? Nobody can really answer those questions though. I did answer something though, What is a red panda.
