Career in Forensic Science

As we know for every puzzle, there is a strategy, and I have always enjoyed solving puzzles and doing my best to use clues or other individuals to solve them. Forensic Science requires the same problem solving, patience and level-headed approach that a puzzle does. A career in forensic science is a great way of combining my love of science, helping others as well as utilizing problems solving and applying it in the lab. I can provide my deductive reasoning and analytical thinking to make a conclusion to solve crimes to find out the who, what, where why, and how.

Just as I have done in novels of murder mysteries, forensics, and crime.

I have always had an interest in these genres since middle school. Some of these books include Jane Harper’s The Dry, Patricia Cornwell’s Postmortem, Simon Beckett’s The Chemistry of Death, Kathy Reichs Two Nights, Stieg Larsson’s The Girl Who Played with Fire, and a recent read Stephen King’s The Outsider.

Stephen King’s The Outsider is a great example of how analyzing evidence is such a key part of a crime scene. Along, with books I also developed a strong interest in crime-related television programs and real-life crime cases where some individuals are rightfully or even wrongfully accused.

I knew at this point I wanted forensics to be a major part of my future career as in high school, I took an elective in forensics. The course focuses on the analysis of evidence collection, fingerprinting, the decomposition process, DNA analysis, crime scenes, skeletal remains, human remain, toxicology, and document validity.

As a class, we were also presented with case studies and crime scenarios which ultimately helped to understand the implications and complicated issues by social and psychological reasons that are part of forensics.

Another opportunity that I partook in was in my Chemistry Seminar course at Grand Valley State University where I presented on traditional gunshot residue analysis found in primers compared to alternatives using organic gunshot residues that can be found on the hands even after several hours of firing. In the article Skin Permeation of Organic Gunshot Residue: Implications for Sampling and Analysis by Jordan Wade Moran and Suzanne Bell I studied and researched on the estimated amount of OGSR deposited on hands during discharge of a firearm, utilize Franz diffusion cells for skin permeation, use mass spectrometry, obtain direct deposition and how observe the detection capability is a function of the efficacy of sampling and sample preparation.

I chose to apply to your university because of the reputation of the faculty being Renowned American Board of Criminalistics (ABC) and American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) which will aid in providing a strong scientific foundation when pursuing my degree in Forensic Pathology. I am also impressed by being provided first-hand opportunities to attend autopsies alongside with fellow colleagues and collaborate in cold case investigations. I am fascinated by the extensive learning support facilities and small class sizes, which all provide for a stimulating experience’s that can be found at Arcadia University by the guaranteed internships at The Center for Forensic Science and Research Education. I also find it interesting that Arcadia University is one of only a select few institutions that has been nationally accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission and gives much more of a challenge to be able to partake in this graduate program.

Finally, I would like to also learn more information on Karen Scott’s research of the analysis on hair for drugs when using liquid extraction. It is for these reasons that I wish to undertake a Master’s of Science in Forensic Science at Arcadia University.
