Eilis Lacey and her older sister Rose live with their mother in Enniscorthy, a small town in Ireland. Since there is no work, the three brothers have moved a few years ago to Birmingham. Sister Rose is etepetete something. She likes to look at yourself in the mirror, pays attention to her clothes, hairstyle and fine-tune the painted face. With her salary as secretary keeps the small family afloat. For Eilis there is no work. She tries to please everyone, not hatched, and even her landlady Mrs. Kehoe is their relation to the goodness in person. Each time Eilis is willing to work overtime in the department store. Even Father Flood supports actively every year when he lines his Christmas party for 200 homeless people and people in distress. Evening classes it forms and reaches its conclusion as a bookkeeper. Some readers runs their lives in calm waters may say, but it was a boring novel.. I disagree vehemently. First, I consider it a blessing to have once again read a book in which neither killed nor was tortured; were still exploited in which people neither incriminating; stood in neither political nor social problems at the center; which is not written in a way that it can only be understood with the highest concentration.

“Brooklyn” is a reading experience. The author takes time for everything; clearly and in detail, he describes with well-chosen words locales and situations, and with very soft tones he brings his characters to life.

How good is it to imagine, for example, it was on a Saturday in grocer of Enniscorthy: one wonders whether one would belong to preferred customers, actually brings tomatoes from their back room for Miss Kelly, or if you were dispatched with a stale bread. A beautiful piece of prose!

The cover fits perfectly with the novel. Here is a young lady along with the Lord is on a ship deck. Both look back, the ship sails forward, the future is uncertain.
