However the most iconic of them all is the Guayabo National Monument. Guayabo is a significant archaeological site in Costa Rica located about 17 kilometers from Turrialba (30 minutes’ drive). With its higher elevation, you can get an amazingly impressive ground for bird watching.

La Marta Wildlife Refuge

You may miss wildlife at Turrialba Volcano National Park but easily compliment that at a wildlife refuge center. Well, Costa Rica is one of the leading countries in North America with fully equipped animal refuge centers. Statistics suggest that there are about 31 national parks, 50 wildlife refuges, 13 forest reserves and 8 biological reserves in Costa Rica making it a global tourist destination. So, if you are touring Turrialba, La Marta Wildlife Refuge would be a perfect place to get a look at the diverse animal species native to Costa Rica. 40% of secondary forest and 60% of primary forest give this extensive 1518 hectares wildlife refuge center its unique flora and fauna species.

With the refuge center littered with numerous trails, finding your way to the gold mines might turn into a gamble.
