When I think of a monster, I think of something that plants nothing but unadulterated fear in me. A monster is something that is cruel and ruthless. Something that wants nothing more than to do harm to you, or others. It doesn’t have to be big and ugly, or have sharp teeth in order to be categorized as a monster, but as long as it has the objective to harm you. Monsters lurk in your nightmares.
And they haunt you while you sleep. To me, a monster is a man who thrives off of using and maltreating women; A man who repeatedly rapes, and emotionally abuses a woman. This particular monster isn’t ugly or big, nor does he have sharp teeth. This monster is actually quite handsome, and very convincing. He is also very manipulative and cruel. My definition of a monster is nothing short of being biased. This individual monster has ruined lives, and shows no emotion for the damage he has done… Or even possibly will do to his son in the future.
There’s a quote that I love, and I think it fits very well with my own feeling on what a monster is. Rick Riordan states in The Lightning Thief that “The real world is where the monsters are”. I mean don’t get me wrong. I find other things quite horrifying. But nothing scares me more than the monster that is my son’s deadbeat, abusive father.
Other’s might be more scared by the unknown, and the things that aren’t relatively real.
One of the more popular horror movie series that comes to mind is Paranormal Activity. Personally, I don’t find those movies remotely scary. I believe that one of the scariest things about the movie series to people is the fact that you never actually see the ghost. Throughout the movies, to my knowledge, it is mostly the idea that a ghost or something paranormal is in the house. So for the most part I think it’s up to the audience’s imagination to differentiate what this monster could possibly look like. And THAT could possibly be the scariest part to those movies…Being left to your own mind and imagine what those monsters are truly like. Not all monsters are bad, though. And not all monstrous looking creatures are actually monsters! If you just think of someone or something abnormal, that doesn’t classify it as a monster. I see a woman around my town every once and a while. She looks as if she was badly burned, or maybe she was even just born that way. Her face is badly mutilated, and she has an “O” shaped mouth which is always open.
One time I was with my friend when we saw her and I won’t ever forget what he said about her. When we saw the woman, the first thing that came out of his mouth was “That broad straight up looks like she came out of Silent Hill or something!”. Granted, this woman was a little freaky looking. But I know that she wasn’t a monster. She was just a normal person, who was probably in an unfortunate accident. And it’s horrible to think that people could just look at this lady and automatically consider her to be a monster. I think that the most important thing to know is that monsters come in all shapes and sizes; and the scariest ones are those who are walking alongside us every day.
