The poem “Miniver Cheevy” written by Edward Arlington Robinson is about a boy who wishes he was born in an earlier time period with warriors and Medicine “Miniver loved the days of old when swords were bright and steeds were prancing. The vision of a warrior bold Would set him dancing” Miniver is bored of the place he lives in and wants to fight “Miniver cursed the commonplace and eyed a khaki suit with loathing” Miniver feels as though he was meant to fight, but he was born in the wrong time period for this.
He was also poor “Miniver scorned the gold he sought, but sore annoyed was he without it” he did not have very much money all Miniver Cheevy wanted was to be born into times of war in order to fight this poem was quite interesting because not many people lust after times of war.
Many are relieved to not be fighting during the current time era.
It brings forth a new idea of how fighting in war may appear to be better than poverty for some I enjoyed this idea because it made me think about just how bad life can get for some. If one desires to go to war their life must not be very suitable the life of Miniver Cheevy was just so terrible that he did desire to go to war, in fact he wanted to life in the time era of warriors and bright shining swords. Miniver may have just been attracted to the idea of war and brutality, this may be one of his interests because most of the time citizens hear about the grand aspects of war such as wins, glory, or fame.
That may have cause Miniver’s lust for war to begin “Miniver Cheevy” was a good poem because it leaves room for the reader to make sense of the situation in their own way.
