Exploring White Collar Crime

The criminal phenomenon, I am interested in is, White Collar Crime. I am interested in learning more about it, because, in my opinion these type of people who commit, White Collar Crimes, they are not criminals per say / professional criminals, who out of the blue decided to defraud their clients, employers, nation / state, IRS, and or shareholders. And finally, because these crimes are not generally investigated and they are the least prosecuted, because, they have a name to conceal or to protect their personal life.

The reasons I think what causes this crime of White Collar Crime, is as follows: They have overwhelming personal pressure, in reference to personal obligations and difficulties, such as financial woes, debts, and in my opinion have a great position on the nation or state.

The historical theory of crime, that would best explain this type of crime in my opinion, comes from Cesare Beccaria, the father of classical criminology. Why? Because, Cesare Beccaria (2016) stated, “that human beings are rational and act in own of self-interest” (p.

10). And, that is what a person who commits a white collar crime does. They act for their own interest, not for the interest of someone else. Also, Cesare Beccaria (2016) stated, “that they choose courses of actions, that will maximize pleasure and minimize pain” (p.10). Here, in the White Collar Crime the maximize pleasure can be obtained by a person who embezzled money, by stealing monies from their employer or any corporate to maximize their own pleasure on stealing money they didn’t have before.

And, by minimizing pain, by feeling a bit of ease of having more money.

These type of people minimize their pain, by obtaining / stealing monies from large companies when they have financial woes, and or other personal debts. The key elements of the theory, that I think fit this theory is as follows: 1. Criminal Solutions can be easily attractive, 2. People have free will to commit criminal or lawful things to meet needs, 3. Punishment needs to be severe, swift and effective. There is a discussion on the video clip, that starts around 40.04, from a caller named Barbara that talks about White Collar Crime, and how it goes forgotten, and not paid attention enough. Why? Because, it is committed Anglo on a grander scale. Such as President Bush, as she explained. I think she is correct, that no one does anything on this subject.

Why? Because, it is always committed by Anglo people like who have a big name, on society. She explained, how things where never talked about it, they were dismissed and forgotten. So here is where White Collar Crime is present in full colors, in my opinion. So these types of law violations or crimes as she explained, and I am with her in her opinion too, are generally the least investigated and least prosecuted. Because, unfortunately, they are protected by privileges of race, class and gender. Therefore, in my point of view, White Collar Crime is a crime that is less concern in the public eye, than other types of crime. And we all know for a fact, that White Collar Crime, in terms of dollars, is even more consequential for society in whole. Finally, we know that Beccaria believed that a crime could be deterred through punishment, but because of the type of crime and because of some of these important people per say, have a title, and no punishment is done and its kept in the down low, out of societies eye.
