Light and dark are contrasting imagesi They represent love and hatred William Shakespeare uses light and dark images throughout the romantic comedy The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, These images appear in many different scenes, The light and dark images are most significant in the scene following the wedding night. In the beginning of scene five after Romeo spends the night with Juliet right after their wedding Shakespeare uses light and dark images to show how they effect Romeo and Juliet’s life.
Romeo woke up the day after he and Juliet got married to the sound of a lark singingi He knew he had to leave soon because if he was found in Juliet’s bedroom then he would be killed immediately. Romeo was saying goodbye to Juliet but she was trying to convince him to stay, She had told him that it was no yet morning Juliet was telling him that he heard the nightingale, the bird that only sings at night on the nearby pomegranate, not the lark, the bird that only sings in the day Romeo was denying the fact that it was nightingale because he knew it was the lark signaling that it was time to leave for Mantua.
Juliet attempts to convince Romeo one last time saying that it was a meteor that lit up the sky, it was not light outsider Romeo tells Juliet that he will stay if she really wants him to but he will be taken into prisoner and killed if he is found by anyone What Romeo just told Juliet made her realize that it was better for Romeo to leave than to stay with her and die.
She sends Romeo away to head to Mantua. It is getting lighter outside every minute but their sadness is getting darker, “Romeo and Juliet’s love is a light in the midst of the darkness of the hate around them” (Parker 76). This quote shows how Romeo and Juliet love each other so much that they don’t care that their families are fighting The darkness is the tensions between the Capulet’s and Montague’s while their love is the only thing that doesn’t have them killing each otheri Romeo and Juliet would not let anything get in between them especially their families.
Shakespeare also uses light and dark images by using the sun and the moon, Romeo compares Juliet to the sun while he compares himself to the moon. Juliet is all things bright and holy while Romeo is all things bad and sinful, She is supposed to be a good influence on Romeo and not get into trouble but she does the exact opposite of what she represents. Romeo represents everything that is bad and unholy because he is to be a bad influence on Juliet and he is part of the reason that they got married and never told their parents which led them to each kill themselves The sun and moon are opposites of each other just like Romeo and Juliet are The sun is bright and everything on Earth needs it to survive while the moon is duller and is not needed as much Juliet is bright and beautiful like the sun Light and dark are contrasting images They represent love and hatred.
