Let’s take a look and dive deep into Arther Miller’s The Crucible, to see why it should still be taught in classes today, worldwide. This story is one of the greatest pieces of literature depicting how the actions of one another can affect the person you are and the world around you. There is an abundance of qualities and life lessons or examples that can be valuable to our character and building ourselves in today’s world, especially with all of the added pressure in life.
The Crucible includes various examples of sacrifice and making tough decisions under pressure. One moment in The Crucible where a sacrifice is made is when John Proctor chooses not to confess in order to save his wife, Elizabeth Proctor.
This shows the lack of selfishness coming from protagonist, John Proctor, which is a substantial reason as to how kids in schools today can learn from this. An example of a character forced to make a decision under pressure is, also, when John must choose to confess or not in order to do what he feels is best.
Elizabeth Proctor shows good morality due to her confidence in her husband and her support towards whatever John may choose to do (Hytner, Miller 1228). Students can learn from this when faced against challenges they may not be able to overcome alone, by either building their self confidence or having the ability to help others out in these situations.
Repeating the same thing over again and expecting a different result is not possible.
You can not expect a different result with no change. In The Crucible, characters such as Abigail lie to cover for themselves, and there is barely an argument by the courtroom to prove whether there is proof or not, so the court just assumes she is telling the truth. This shows how consistent the court is with it’s poor system of justice. Also, in the end of The Crucible, innocent people are hang, due to the flawed system. Without change, there would still be so many wrongful convictions. This shows how important it is to make changes and adapt to new circumstances.
Morality is something that is very important and valuable to ourselves. When John Proctor choose not to confess in order to save his wife, he knows that he would be hung but chose this anyway. This was both a courageous and brave act, and shows this character has a good morality and cares to think about his decisions before he makes them, for the best interest of himself and others. Others would agree that this story is very vulgar and harsh to be taught in schools today. However, The Crucible sheds light on so many topics that need to be discussed today and many lessons that can be taught and learned by younger kids in classes. In conclusion, Arther Miller’s The Crucible should be taught in schools today because this story is one of the greatest pieces of literature depicting how the actions of one another can affect the person you are and the world around you. Also, there are many lessons to pick up and learn from this story.
