Rockefeller was in charge of The Standard Oil Company, he was a huge philanthropist and he made sure to use this company through horizontal integration. Rockefeller did not like the fact that there can be a competition with his company so by using horizontal integration, he made sure that his company was secure and there can be a continuation of the development of monopolies. This author defends Rockefeller’s company by supporting Social Darwinism. The author’s defense was that Rockefeller was born to be successful and be in charge of the Standard Oil Company was only fitting; according to Social Darwinism.

Since Social Darwinism is the theory about how humans are naturally selected and that they are the “survival of the fittest”, Rockefeller was the perfect candidate and person for the job.

The Gilded Age was from about 1870’s to 1900. Populace and economy developed rapidly, much debasement in governmental issues, restraining infrastructures and misuse of laborers, forgettable presidents, distinction between the poor and the rich can be seen.
