The Effect of Dropout Rates on Minorities

While the dropout rates between the two minorities increase, a notable problem with this, is that they aren’t getting their high school diplomas. One primary is making it harder for them to find a job. Institutes of primarily white children and those of predominantly minorities do not receive the same opportunities. There is a stigma placed on those of color that they do not try, so those in higher positions believe that they do not deserve to be helped.

If students are not receiving a diploma or going after a ged, then they are more than likely going to end up without jobs. In the article Minimum Dropout Age and Juvenile Crime in the United States author Md Abdur Rahman Forhad states “By dropping out, individuals significantly forgo the opportunity of higher earnings and more promising careers, since high school dropouts are nearly three times more likely to be unemployed than college graduates” This is an issue because the few decent paying jobs in America require a high school diploma, while the high paying jobs require college degrees.

Racism in the education system must be stopped because these dropouts are satisfied with being lazy and unmotivated. When an individual is constantly in an environment where they feel less than or at a disadvantage they become uninterested. After dropping out most end up living off of government based service known as welfare.

A few services that they become dependent on typically include: Social Security Income (SSI), Housing Assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (Food Stamps). Statistics show that “around 16% of dropouts in the United States are unemployed, and 32% of them live below the poverty line” (Forhad 1). These percentages represent the struggles that dropouts are facing, and why graduation is important. If 32% of America’s population are living that means a little less than half of the population are barely making it, hence hindering the process of change and becoming stable. One other reason the cycle of poverty continues to be happening is because of teen pregnancy in high school. In the article Fewer Teen Moms but Still a Dropout Puzzle for Schools Jill Barshay states that “Latina mothers were the least likely to finish their high school degrees…roughly 45 percent of them obtained no credential at all.”

Young girls get pregnant and haven’t developed a plan on what they’re going to do and because of this they take two routes: relying on their parents or relying on government assistance. Overall producing an increase of unemployment and pushing the poverty rates higher. If the educational system was more concerned with helping the minority communities and protecting them from the unintentional racism, then more students would still be in school.

A broken education system that still runs based on skin color ruins the students within the schools. It creates a broken community for the minorities affecting, in this case African Americans and Hispanics. The two minorities over the past years have had a higher rate of dropping out of high school than any other races. This is causing a burden within their homes because they aren’t receiving their highschool diplomas, increase the crime rates, and a continuation of the cycle of poverty.
