The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller and originally published on January 22, 1953. The Salem Witch Trials was a bunch of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. 200 or more people were accused, nineteen were found guilty and hung.The play is historical fiction, meaning it has real characters and real events. Some realities and fictions are displayed differently to satisfy the idea of the Cold War. The Yellow Wallpaper was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and written in June of 1890.

The Yellow Wallpaper is about a woman who had a baby and was struggling with postpartum depression. Her husband, John, a doctor during this time period believed moving the woman to a new home would be the solution to her depression. But John would not let her carry on with day to day activities. The woman whose name might be Jane but was never actually stated continued to suffer because of the lack of knowledge and research about mental illnesses.

Both The Yellow Wallpaper and The Crucible are still relevant today. Mental illness is always going to be a topic where people will have differing opinions. I feel like so often we choose to ignore mental health because we can’t actually see it. The Yellow Wallpaper is a cry for help, showing us that women need rights and independence. If the woman would’ve been able to write freely and talk about her feelings in her journal maybe she would have “gotten better”, The woman’s husband could not understand what it was like to not have freedom because as a man he had much more freedom than she did.

Although, during the Salem Witch Trials some had to sacrifice their own lives. The Salem Witch Trials also consisted of women accusing men of sexual assault. This happens all too often. Unfortunately, during the 1900’s women were not pushed as much by law for false accusations.
