As his professor, I had the opportunity to observe his development and growth into an excellent mathematician. Ioannis has proven that through hard work, follow through, and teamwork, he can accomplish tasks in a courteous and timely manner. Ioannis is exceptionally diligent; I vividly recall coming into the department late in the evening on the weekend and finding Ioannis at work. In late 2016, the Department of Mathematics here in Glasgow decided to initiate a free math tutoring workshop for 1st and 2nd-year students.
Ioannis volunteered as a tutor for this program and helped many students with their math homework and questions on a weekly basis. He was a natural teacher and was able to communicate concisely math ideas that often confuse students. Ioannis has also proved to be an excellent team player. In his third year, he was paired with other students on a presentation project about Graph Theory and Analysis. He led his team on to the best performance earning the highest grade in the class.
On his part of the project, he provided a particularly exciting and imaginative approach to describe a complex concept without omitting any technical details. On the other hand, Ioannis has many interests outside of academics. He was an active member of the University of Glasgow’s chess and math society.
As far as I know, Ioannis co-organized chess tournaments and was the convenor of chess teaching/training here in Glasgow. Through his society activities, Ioannis broadened his experiences and had the opportunity to tackle many challenges which he was presented with.
In addition, I had many discussions with Ioannis throughout his undergraduate studies in Glasgow.
His inquisitive nature drove him to learn all he could and ask questions. I very much enjoyed my talks with Ioannis about mathematical rigor and conciseness of challenging mathematical notions and proofs of fundamental theorems. At the same, Ioannis was very interested in the practical aspect of mathematics, and it was made clear to me that Ioannis would seek out an applied field to study and work on. On a personal note, he is exceptionally nice, considerate and sensitive. Even at the most stressful and intense periods, Ioannis is always cheerful and joyous.
All in all, Ioannis is a wonderful young man, always eager to share and eager to learn. Add to all this that Ioannis is a very congenial person, well-liked by faculty and fellow students alike, and you will see why I am so positive about this bright and energetic young scholar.
