The American Dream Eventually Fails

“If you can make it through the night, there’s a brighter day” (Tupac Shakur). This quote relates to the theme of the American Dream because Lennie and George were hoping for better days to come so they could be successful. Two men who travel together during the Great Depression. Steinbeck explores the major theme of the hard work that is needed to achieve the American Dream dies. Steinbeck used the characters, George and Lennie, to show that the American Dream ultimately fails.

In this book, Steinbeck uses Lennie to show the American Dream. In chapter one Lennie and George are discussing their dream. George says,“ With us it ain’t like that. We got a future” (Steinbeck, 14). This quote shows that Lennie and George had a future together. They’ll be something one day. This is not the only example of Lennie showing the theme of the American Dream. George made a hard decision that will haunt him for life.

At the end of the novel, George has to make a life-changing decision that affects Lennie’s ability to live out the dream. “ He pulled the trigger”. This quote shows that George killed Lennie and the dream with him. Lennie and George had big hopes. They would have lived out the dream if Lennie wasn’t so dangerous. George did what had to be done, but in the process he the American Dream he has with his friend, Lennie.

In this novel, Steinbeck uses George to show the dream ultimately fails.

George had to make sure Lennie knew he was sorry and they would live out the dream. “ I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now”. This quote indicates that George wanted to make sure Lennie was at peace before he died. George wants Lennie to know he wasn’t mad at him before he killed him, and ultimately killed the dream. George killed Lennie and the dream was gone. “ I did it, “ George said tiredly. This quote proves that George is explaining how he killed Lennie. Once he killed Lennie the dream of owning the ranch was gone with him. This quote shows the dream dies. George manipulates Lennie to think the dream was still going to happen.

What George did was wrong, but Lennie might have killed more people. George didn’t want to kill his friend, Lennie he had to do what needed to be done. George and Lennie had their dream all planned out. Steinbeck uses the characters, Lennie and George, to prove the dream ultimately fails. Once Lennie was dead the dream died with him. I think if you really believed in your hopes and dreams it will happen. Also it’s better to have a friend by your side to help you have hopes in yourself and your dreams. It’s always better with a friend.
