The Affirmative Action Policy

Support or favor an individual who is part of a minority group. Affirmative action divide people, because some say it is effective and helpful that makes our society better and equal, but on the other hand some say it is a bad way to do things, since we live in equality with equal chances and they should not favor someone over others, because it has a negative impact in the society that will cause a lot of other problems. Afirmative action seems beneficial for minorities, but in real life it is inmoral and ineffective because it causes contrary discrimination and only a certain group of minority can benefit from the affirmative actions.

Affirmative action wants to compensate for unequal salary for different races and gender. It means whites can support their kid more than a black, and this is why an affirmative action is fair, because it gives equality. A lot of people argue that this is wrong, bad and ineffective in society, while others argue that this helps better our society by giving chance to the historically discriminated against people.

Those who are arguing for it believe that racism is alive in today’s society and minorities are still discriminated against that lower their chance to be someone and they support affirmative action to help these people have equal opportunity. Those who are against it belive it would be a reverse discrimination, by “stealing” the chances from a talented person to a less talented one and as we all know the world need the best from everything.

Some people even bring up Martin L. King, he wanted a society with equal rights to work, play and live. It also contains the right to have the equal opportunity to other races, and live in peace. If we give advantage to a race group then we “fail’ ‘ his dream. To be successful people have to work hard, hard work will be paid off by having equal opportunity, no matter if the person is black, or hispanic, or white. Some people might have less opportunities because they or their ancestors messed up a business, or just simply didn’t worked so hard and this is not discrimination, just because someone made a bad decision doesn’t make them disriminated or unequal. People have to do everything from self-power, no one receives help, and no one should. Those who get accepted, or even get scholarships are because of their hard work or talentedness.

Today our world is very equal and affirmative action would just cause conflicts, problems, and inequity. Everybody deserves to have the same chance. If we give aid to minorities then the whites and other groups will feel unequal and unfair. The USA is way too diverse to make such advantages to certain groups. History can’t be changed, but the future can be based on our decisions. To support this argument I bought a quote from President Gregory T. Chambers: “As the nation’s demographics indicate, this nation is becoming increasingly diverse and it is not the time to close the doors of opportunity based on race or national origin. This nation’s future depends upon all qualified individuals receiving a chance to compete in education, employment and business.”

It just supports the argument that the US is just way too diverse to favor certain groups, because there are way too many groups living in the US and it would just cause tensions and conflicts between the groups about not having equality, fairness, and opportunity. The supportive part is less strong in my opinion, because there are more reasons not to support affirmative action, but no one can say that the supportive part is mistaken since the evidence of minorities have less chance starts from a very young age. We can see the difference even in fourth grade.“The percentage of children who are able to read are, whites: 40%, hispanic: 16%, affrican-american: 12% and the ability in math are , white: 34%, hispanic: 10%, african-american: 5%”*, this shows that a white is way smarter than a hispanic or an african-american student.

These stats show that a minority will have less chance to get a high education, since they are already behind.  The supporters argue the reasons to give aid to minorities, such as hispanis and african americans is to reduce the difference and have a more equal competition for better jobs and learning. These reasons are strong reasons to support affirmative language, but don’t stop reading. There is a book called “The Education of Richard Rodriguez ”, there is a young hispanic boy and it is about how education changed him and his family. The book is a very strong supportive evidence against affirmative action, because the young boy became a middle-class man, he achieved it with hard work. He didn’t get any favorings and aids, he just worked hard and changed his fate that his family wanted to be, but he paid with his family for the “success” he achieved, but he did not regret it, because he didn’t want to live like his parents or brothers.

When he was young he felt discriminated against and meaningless because of his skin and minority class. But by the time he realized the most important things. In chapter 4 of the book he wrote “That is only to say that my complexion assumes its significance from the context of my life. My skin, in itself, means nothing. I stress the point because I know there are people who would label me “disadvantaged” because of my color. They make the same mistake I made as a boy, when I thought a disadvantaged life was circumscribed by particular occupations. … But I was not one of los pobres. What made me different from them was an attitude of mind, my imagination of myself.” He learned that the color doesn’t matter and to accept that some people judge because of skin color, but it has nothing to do with “himself”, because the knowledge is inside not outside. He didn’t receive help, he “just” worked hard to achieve success and middle-class.

Hard Working people will always get what they deserve if they have courage and knowledge. A minority can achieve things with the same amount of work, while with a little bit more work they can achieve even more. This helped Rodriguez to achieve his goals, without his hard efforts he wouldn’t be able to write and publish a book. He paid with his family, because the family lost its magical touches and feelings, but Rodriguez could give a better life to his children without the fear that the kid has to sacrifice his family to be someone, because his parents (Rodriguez) can support him now. But as an adult things turn out to be normal and just alright, in chapter 6 he wrote “All those faraway childhood mornings in Sacramento, walking together to school, [my siblings and I] talked but never mentioned anything about what concerned us so much: the great event of our schooling, the change it forced on our lives. Years passed. Silence grew thicker, less penetrable.

We grew older without ever speaking to each other about any of it. Intimacy grooved our voices in familiar notes; familiarity defined the limits of what could be said. Until we become adults. And now we see each other most years at noisy family gatherings where there is no place to stop the conversation, no right moment to turn the heads of listeners, no way to essay this, my voice.” He accepted that education changed his family in a bad way, because they became more and more dependent, maybe they didn’t want to accept that education is important since the parents were really religious. Education improved the condition of their lives, but the family became colder. Rodriguez achieved a better life, but the cost was his family. But as an adult man he lived his own life and didn’t meet with his family everyday, so their relationship became normal. Wheneer they met they had a good time, because they still loved each other, just it became harder, because no one wanted to act stupid an show bad examples to their kids.

“The fundamental unfairness and arbitrariness of preferences — why should the under-qualified son of a black doctor displace the qualified daughter of a Vietnamese boat refugee?”, it means that the unqualified person should not get the job from a qualified person even if the unqualified person is a minority. And a minority can get a job that a nonwhite person should get, but he doesn’t count as a minority so he will lose the chance to get it. A vietnamiese refugee doesn’t count as a minority, because in the US the minority word describes the hispanic and black people. So if a college applies the affirmative action the qualified vietnamiese girl lose her big chance, because an under qualified “minority” get the position.

As we can see it is easier to argue against affirmative actions, but the win is not so sure, because the supporters have right in some cases. The mentality of the minorities is different because of historical differences and an aid might help them, but it is not going to change their mentality and life if the person doesn’t want it or adopted the mentality of his ancestors. Everything has a reason, it is not only because of history. Favoring people is a good idea, but not based on race and ethnic, it should be based on effort, mentality and skills.
