Globalisation and mass media, both have a positive, knowledgeable and communicative measure that affects our socialization and how we perceive things. After some research, I will briefly explain the three topics in this essay and clarify how these topics relate to me before my concluding statement. Socialization, Globalisation and Mass media are vital links that play a huge part in the way the world is structured and the way we live and learn.
The study of social science is evidently the study of people in our society, nations and groups to individuals from the way a person thinks or looks to their trends and actions.
The way a person has been taught affects our values and beliefs. Such as nature an inherited attribute like our appearance and Nurture, the behaviours we have been taught as a child, that we learn off others and our surroundings. Physical anthropologists study peoples biological and physical characteristics which is a huge contribution to socialization.
For example: I am a Niuean woman, born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. I was brought up in a Christian family that went to school 5 days a week, played sports every Saturday and went to church every Sunday, a norm for me, I am currently studying at Unitec and socialising with others in class is beneficial because we bounce knowledge off one another whilst learning. This world has a very diverse socio-economical cultural group of people therefore, socialization differs in different parts of this world. An individual’s environment and the people they socialise with impact the way they learn and how they react to certain situations in life, such as a person’s gender, age and race, all contributing to their lifestyle.

The prehistorical views on socialization mentions that children at a young age (15-16 years) were known as young adults educated in preparation for adulthood and that could get married, after marriage they were then seen as mature enough to be classed as young adults which was a norm in the past. Today males are still educated in preparation for adulthood however in the past males were perceived as macho and females were more feminine. Males were known for their masculinity, physically fit, doing outdoor duties such as heavy lifting compared to females, their role was more indoors, cooking, cleaning and taking care of children. In today’s view, the understanding of what males and females can do is neutral, male and female can do both roles, they can work while males look after the children, cook and clean. When I look at society from pre-historical on socialization until present, it has changed enormously. Socialization is shaped by interaction all influenced by family, schools, peers, surroundings and mass media.
My ideas and beliefs on globalisation has changed since starting this class and as a result I feel as if I am not as ignorant about social-science and the areas that has been covered in class. Globalisation is a process of integration and interaction where society is combined for example globalisation economy, to make international trade easier. When I think of globalisation I think of America, a first world country with goods that have been made from third world countries such as Indonesia. One of the biggest eye-opener for me was learning about globalisation, the process that a nation performs such as where the clothes and shoes that we wear or coffee that we drink are made, that is available to us in New Zealand. In class we were asked if we have ever wondered about where things came from, like Nike? After watching something about Nike in class it turns out Nike shoes are McDonalised, McDonalised is a term used to understand how much Mc Donald’s has globalised, everyone knows Mc Donald’s, it is everywhere hence the word mcdonalised. This business has spread worldwide just like Nike. Nike are made in countries where Nike factories are, such as India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines where people are paid little money for their labour making great shoes, before being processed, shipped, distributed across the globe and put on the market, sold for a lot more money than what they were purchased for in the beginning. My family and I wear Nike and I appreciate my shoes even more now, but I am not sure if I will continue to purchase anymore.
When I was younger media use to be newspapers, radio, television and magazines, but now mass media has become a lot bigger, intended to reach a macro group of people. There are other devices such as computers, tablets and phones that are used to send messages from across the globe utilising the internet. Today, media has enhanced our understanding of this world and even though I may have only gone as far as Australia, it is amazing that I am still able to see the world at the touch of my fingers. Connecting people across the world and keeping everyone updated with disasters like the one in China or the royal weddings just to name a couple shows how powerful the media is now. A person could even become famous without being a million-dollar paid actress or a singer. By just utilising apps for media attention can make a person known and famous, even if a person does not want to be famous but just heard whether they are famous or not, if it is important to an individual and they want to share they can by utilising apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, twitter or YouTube apps I am only familiar with, but I know there are more. Do you see how huge mass media is. While I was going through social media I came across the strike in New Zealand for better pay for nurses. I thought this topic was relevant to not only our class social science but everyone in New Zealand. However, that was not the only one topics found during media study, there were others such as, rape in Congo, rape in New Zealand, Bi-polar, sexual harassment, social equity and equality in New Zealand, Black lives matter and many more that have been shared across the world through media. However, one of the disadvantages of mass media is the privacy, like a picture or a comment you have made, there is no deleting and be done, once it has been posted that is it. It is always good to be aware of what is happening in this world and to be careful what you put up on mass media.
The study of social science is evidently the study of people, a society, a nation, a group and an individual from the way a person thinks or looks to their trends and actions. Social-science has introduced me to areas such as socialisation, globalisation and mass media and enhancing my knowledge on why these three topics are relevant and how they have helped shaped society. Globalisation and mass media relates to everyone, technology and internet has boosted mass media that covers a part of social science. A topic used to identify sociology and all its components that helps with our understanding in our society.
