Slavery and Martin Luther King Essay

The situation of the blacks from the 50s until today In 1954, when the decision was made that the segregation at schools had to be stopped, there were different voices and opinions all over the country. One of them belonged to Reverend Martin Luther King jr., a young theologian who became the leader of the Civil Rights Movement some years later. That was a group of people who fought for desegregation and equal rights for blacks without violence. In 1955 a woman called Rosa Parks refused to stand up in a bus for a white man. That caused the beginning of Martin Luther King‘s bus boycott in Montgomery that lasted more than a year.

After starting demonstrating against segregation in buses on 5th of December he got arrested, his house was bombed but he had success.1956 the Supreme Court made laws against the discrimination in public transport. That was a clear victory for the Civil Rights Movement and so he became a respected leader. There were conflicts between blacks and people who fought for the “white way of life” and there always were fights and violence. Another voice for equality belonged to John F. Kennedy.

He dammned the segregation and supported the integration e.g. at schools. In October 1962 the University of Mississippi was asked to admit itsfirst black student. Because of new revolts Kennedy had to send soldiers to protect him. The laws against segregation existed but in reality it went on. In 1963 the Supreme Court made laws against discrimination in public areas.

That was another victory for the blacks. In the same year Martin Luther King started his peaceful protests. One event was the march of 200 000 people who were led by him to Washington where he made his famous speech: “I have a dream ..” In 1964 Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize. Again riots and trouble broke out. There was another man who fought for the rights of the blacks, Malcolm X.

Slavery in the United States Essay

The word slavery cannot only be defined as the owning of one person by another person, but it is also known to be one of the greatest contributions to the history of the United States. When slavery had just began to evolve the United States were known as colonies of the New World. In the year of 1619, thefirst African Americans arrived in the New World right off the coast of Jamestown. From then on, any rights or freedoms given to African Americans began to diminish. Although there were many different races of slaves and servants in the Americas, African Americans were the most discriminated against.

African Americans become known as the inferior race; however, black slaves were the most popular choice among the slaveholders because they provided the cheapest and best labor. Many factors added to the start of black slavery in the colonies; economic and racial reasons were two of the biggest contributors. One of the prime roles in the enslavement of blacks was the economy. The colonies in the South wanted to produce the most goods for export as possible; therefore requiring the cheapest labor. With the money the colonies were making from the exports, they were able to buy more slaves.

The price on slaves then started to rise quickly, which meant even more profits could be drawn from the slaves who were already owned. A slave owner could not only profit from the new increase in the cost of a slave but also in their breeding and labor as well. When the colonies began exporting rice, cotton, and tobacco, slave labor was in high demand. After these goods became tied with significant economic profits, the labor of the slaves became tied to the economy. As well as economic reasons, racial discrimination was another critical part that resulted in the enslavement of Africans.

Long before African Americans were made slaves in the Americas, they still faced many forms of discrimination.

Slavery in Mexico and South America Essay

Slavery in the Americas was quite diverse. Mining operations in the tropics experienced different needs and suffered different challenges than did plantations in more temperate areas of Northern Brazil or costal city’s serving as ports for the exporting of commodities produced on the backs of the enslaved peoples from the African continent. This essay will look at these different situations and explore the factors that determined the treatment of slaves, the consequences of that treatment, and the conditions that lead to resistance by the slaves working in their various capacities.

After the initial conquest of Mexico and South America, it was time to develop the economy and export the resources that would benefit the monarchy back home in Spain and Portugal. Silver and Gold were two such commodities.Silver mines in Northern Mexico were supervised by blacks who directed the Indians in the arduous task of extracting the precious metal. Gold in Central Mexico was also mined by blacks. The Gold mining regions were hot, tropical, isolated areas of the jungle. The regions were sparsely populated and it was difficult to keep the locals as a work force.

The introduction of disease in the tropics made these areas death zones to the indigenous people as they had no resistance to the virulent plagues. There was a need to get cheap or free labor that would be capable of resisting the disease and who would be easier to dominate than the locals who could run off and establish themselves elsewhere relatively easily. The natural answer was to obtain slaves from the African continent. The slave trade was already in operation on the African continent. Coastal cities there often enslaved inland peoples so it was not difficult to obtain the stock and export them to the Americas. Slaves in the mining regions were subject to harsh, isolated conditions. There were few females and little or no community amongst the slaves.
