Time and space are the main features of continuity editing, the 180° rule, where the camera should not cross the line of action when two shots are edited together. There will be a jump cut if it changes position and violates 180° rule. In one scene of Run Lola Run, the left side of Lola seems like the right side in the next shot, also in the following shot, jump cuts are used intentionally to create a discontinuity in editing. Eye line matches are used in Run Lola Run as continuity editing.
In the first shot we have the character observing something off screen, then we have a cut showing what she sees, then we see the reaction of our character based on what she sees.
Temporal continuity is achieved with sound in Run Lola Run. When Lola hit the woman, we see some freezing shots from the woman’s life. But, since the music continues, we assume that Lola is still running.
Though it shows Lola keeps running after those freezing shots. In the first run, when Manni told Lola what happened to him in the train, shown by black and white shots as a flashback, the music also continues so that we understand they are still talking.
Several transitions were used fade-ins, fadeouts and wipe were utilized several times. The wipe is used together with a graphical effect at the beginning of the film, processing Lola’s thinking about who can help her, it could be interpreted as a change of course of action. With the wipe, Lola’s exits her still and quiet life begins, and she begins running not only physically, but also mentally to find the right person to help her. Fade-ins and outs are also used to emphasize the border between reality and dream. In fade-in and fadeout, the most common color used in black, in Run Lola Run red is used to emphasize the blood that is shed from Lola and Manni in the first two scenes. Since they were shot, and they faint the fade-in can be considered a cliché.
The rhythm of the film, the scenes where actions are taking place more quickly, the more cuts are used. But with a scene of less action – a dialogue between Lola and her father, fewer cuts are used to give the sense that time is running in a slower manner, to keep the attention of the audience.
