I take great pride and pleasure in writing this letter of recommendation for Mrinali Modi for her admission to the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering Practice program at MIT. I have known her since she joined IIT (BHU), Varanasi in 2013. During her four-year undergraduate program in the Department of Chemical Engineering I have taught her three courses namely, Heat Transfer operations, Transport Phenomena and Modelling, Simulation and Optimization. Additionally, I was also one of her Faculty Advisors for her final year B.

Tech Project. My association with her over all these years has given me plenty of opportunities to know her well as a person and to recognize her capabilities and undoubtedly, Mrinali is one of the best students I have ever met.

Mrinali, right from her sophomore year has been an extraordinary student. She first caught my attention during our interaction in the Simulation Laboratory while discussing the applications of Numerical Methods. I was mesmerized by her way of comprehending and articulating the physical significance of these typical mathematical expressions.

Such a profound understanding of concepts helped her excel right from the first year. In the later years, I have seen her constantly exploring and expanding her research domain and technical skill-set in Chemical engineering by taking up independent research projects in Summers that complemented her interest in Modeling, Design, and Simulation. While doing her summer research projects at IIT Bombay and Reliance Industries Limited she mastered software like COMSOL Multiphysics, Aspen Plus, and HTRI in no time. Her intellectual curiosity and her determination to complete whatever she puts her mind to, have paved the way for her academic excellence.

Her hard work was well acknowledged at her graduation, as she received the prestigious IIT (BHU), Gold Medal, along with five more Gold Medals for securing the highest CPI at B.Tech in Chemical Engineering Examination, 2017.

As one of the advisors of her Final Year Project, I was impressed by her level of dedication and self-discipline throughout her project work. Mrinali’s project was to design: “A packed bed tower to steam strip a given solution of aniline and water, a fixed bed reactor for the partial oxidation of ethylene and a shell and tube heat exchanger to heat ethyl glycol”. The project required her to combine the knowledge of all four years and come up with an optimized solution. Having done industrial training at RIL gave her an extra edge for the process and design calculations. Mrinali’s assumptions were very practical, displaying her high sense of visualizing the nuances as well as the bigger aspects of designing. In addition to the basic design, she also suggested a method for additional heat recovery through pinch analysis. Her team was the only one in the class to give such a detailed view of all three situations. Throughout the semester, I saw her constantly challenging herself and utilizing every moment. She effectively distributed the project responsibilities among her group members by their strengths and kept them motivated throughout. Her clear-cut thinking and maturity helped her handle this situation with great poise. Despite the course load of the fourth year and her Teaching Assistantship, she was never seen compromising with her research objectives. She surely has the drive to become an excellent researcher.

I also had the opportunity of observing her during her Teaching Assistantship, where she again impressed me with her massive positive energy and innovative approach to teaching. I was really surprised to see her explain the complex concepts of Heat and Mass Transfer using daily life examples. Her lectures were well-structured, interesting, and highly interactive. During her problem-solving sessions, she was always open to constructive feedback from her juniors. Her helping nature was not limited to her juniors but was extended to her classmates as well. I have witnessed her several times sitting after class hours and helping her friends understand complex topics.

Besides academics, Mrinali was actively involved in the Institute’s Dramatics Society. I have personally witnessed some of her Stage and Street Plays. Mrinali and her teammates have also represented IIT (BHU) at national-level cultural fests and brought laurels to the college. Her thoughtful and humble nature is reflected in her self-written Street Plays which address several modern-day social issues she cares about. I admire the way she expresses her thoughts so freely, leaving a long-lasting impact on the audience. Moreover, she took social issues like Child Labor, Apathy, Sex Education, etc. in her street plays and performed them in Ghats and Streets of Varanasi, among the common masses. I feel, these awareness drives have highly boosted her character and have helped in build a charismatic personality.

Convinced of her capabilities and knowing her enormous potential, I strongly believe that Mrinali will be a great asset to her graduate Program at MIT. She has been an achiever throughout her time at IIT (BHU) and I am sure that she will continue to do so shortly thereby making significant contributions in her field. Thus, I give her my strongest possible recommendation and wish her all the best in all her future endeavors.
