Raising Awareness of My Own Voice Through My Vocal Role Model and Non-Model

When I chose my vocal role model and non-model, I carefully considered the individual’s vocal execution. I chose Kerry Washington as my vocal role model and Cardi B, as my non- model. I listen to both of them often and I feel like I can effectively express my opinion on each of them Kerry Washington is a renowned American actress; most known for her leading role in the ABC drama, Scandal. Cardi B is a Dominican singer, songwriter, and dancer from the Bronx, New York, commonly known for her charismatic personality on the VH1 reality show, Love 81 Hip Hop: New York.

I enjoy hearing what both of these women have to say on television, but when considering their voices, I don’t believe that there vocal characteristics are in anyway similart I chose Cardi B as my vocal non—model because I believe that her voice and diction contain several flaws. She makes common mistakes that I find myself making as well, mistakes such as leaving off the ending of words, word misuse, or the use of wrong words.

I’ll start with the obvious, when you first here her speak you most likely will notice her poor word pronunciation along with the amount of slang that‘s used in her speech. Cardi B frequently fails to stress syllables in her words.

For example, she may say “popalarity” instead of popularity or “errybody” instead of everybody. Cardi B also tends to speak at a more rapid pace then what is ideal.

Cardi B also uses a lot of filler words such as “like”, “you know what I’m sayin’”, “and”, and “um”, accompanied with vague phrasing such as “things”, ”stuf “, and “whatever“t I believe it is important for a speaker to elaborate so as to not leave the listener wondering. Cardi B’s speech isn’t the worst, but could use some improvement. I chose Kerry Washington as my vocal role model because I find her voice and diction to be executed very well. I often see Kerry speaking during interviews on prime time television so I believe that she has developed a good habit for speaking clearly, Washington has excellent voice quality and pronunciation technique; she uses her articulators (her teeth, tongue, and lower jaw), in such a way that is distinct and clear to listeners I find her rate of speech and duration to be ideal and easy to follow She can effectively use pauses in her speech and in conversation when she wants to make an impact on her words.

I also think Washington has admirable control over her volume and pitch, during her speeches, she projects well while using equal breath support. She never fails to use the appropriate tone to fit the appropriate situation. Kerry Washington is an excellent vocalist. I chose both of these speakers in relation to myself. I tried to find two people that I could find equal amounts of strengths and weaknesses within myself. I would recommend for Cardi B to work diligently on her pronunciation by doing diction exercises. After a while, her pronunciation will start to sound naturalt The consequences a speaker faces when they fail to articulate their words or speak at a normal pace may result in the listener finding it difficult to make out what the speaker is trying to say and they ultimately fail to comprehend. After doing this assignment I can say that analyzing both of these women helped me become more aware of my own voice and diction.
