Discussion 1

Every work of literature has a ‘voice’ that the author uses to speak to the audience. The syllabus is no exception to this rule. This is because the person who has created the outline also uses a voice to communicate the objectives ant topics that should be covered in the course in question (Roberts, 2003). The voices used in these cases often differ in accordance to the information that is passed. The voice in the course syllabus may be authoritarian or friendly. The voice is the creation of the writer and he or she can manipulate it whichever way he or she likes (N.a, 2003). In most cases, the authors use different voices in the case of different situations. For example, while explaining the topics to be learnt, the author may adopt a friendly voice. On the other hand, in the case of grades and submission of assignments an authoritarian voice may be used. Two important factors influence the voice used in a syllabus, the choice of words and tone used in the work (N.a, 2008).

The choice of words affects greatly the voice of the author in the course syllabus. This is because from the use of certain words, the reader is able to identify with the voice the author is using. The use of playful language and remarks is a clear indication that the voice of the author is friendly. However, the use of curt sentences and official language signifies that the author’s voice is authoritarian. Another aspect that is a critical indicator of the voice of the author is the tone used in the syllabus. Tone is a significant factor since it enables the readers to find out the voice in the syllabus. For instance, the use of a lighthearted tone in the course outline shows that the voice of the author is friendly while the use of a serious tone indicates the voice of the author. Identification of the voice is important since it gives the students an idea of the personality of their instructor (Kennedy & Gioia).
