Social control is the process by which groups and individuals within those groups are brought into conformity with dominant social expectations. Social control argues that relationships, communities, individuals will voluntarily limit deviant acts. Three types of conformity are compliance, identification, and internalization. The type of Government that is represented in Panem is totalitarianism, system of government in which the people have virtually no authority and the state wields absolute control, and dictatorship, a type of government where absolute sovereignty is allocated to an individual or a small clique.
In the movie, The Hunger Games, to show how the government grows to oppress the individuals, theCapitols reaction to District thirteen’s rebellion; to keep the other districts in line, they create a gladiator-like game using children.
Although there are several observations that can be made about the oppression of women, for the most part, Katniss plays as a powerful female who is equal to male. Equal in that one boy and one girl is chosen and they are looked at as equal, even though it’s a physical game.
Both Katniss and Peeta have to get made up before they go onto The Hunger Games. As a woman, not any more social than man, men can show aggression toward women, viewed as equal, no matter gender, still can hurt each other. There are clear examples of Katniss defying gender norms, there are not many women in positions of power. Katniss doesn’t need a man, she never has, and she’s not even looking for love.
She actually pretends to be in love with Peeta to make people like them more and try to convince the capitol that they should both be allowed to live. She says “Only I keep wishing I could think of a wayto show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just a piece in their Games.” She wants to prove that she can outsmart all of them and she and Peeta both can become victors. And she succeeds. Kat…
