An exhaust gas scrubber has been installed on-board the DFDS vessel Ficaria Seaways to reduce emission of SOx. The main environmental concern with emissions of SOx , which leads to formation of acid raid and production of ultrafine particles in the atmosphere, some of these particles are born by the wind to land and can penetrate human lungs. These ultrafine particles are created when SO2 comes in contact with the oxygen in the air and oxidizes into SO3. To fix this problem MV Ficaria Seaways has been equipped with an exhaust gas scrubber that neutralizes the SO2 to a water-soluble sulphate that can be discharged to the sea.

An alternative could be low-sulphur fuel but by using this fuel you will have to a invest in a special purifier which is capable of removing the cat-finds that is found in this type of fuel, and are a byproduct form the cracking process the oil refinery uses to manufacture the low-sulphur fuel.

The exhaust gas scrubber onboard MV Ficaria Seaways has been developed as a hybrid scrubber wich can run in either seawater mode or freshwater mode, this is to determinate the main advantages and disadvantages of the two modes.

Seawater Mode

While running in seawater mode the scrubber utilizes an open-loop system. Seawater is pumped into the absorber and uses the natural alkalinity of seawater to absorb and bind the SOx from the exhaust gas, when the water has passes through the scrubber it is discharged into the sea.
