The Child's View of a Hero

The following sample essay on: “The Hero”. From a child point of view, a hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired for his courage or outstanding achievements. In mythology and folklore, a hero is a person of super human qualities who rids the world of all evil.

In my opinion, a hero of the twenty-first century is someone like Mahatma Ghandi or Martin Luther Ling. Jr. These heroes can also be women, such as Mother Tresa or Amelia Earheart.

Ghandi, who is now known as Mahatma Ghandi or Ghandi Jayanti, is the hero who granted India its independence. Ghandi led the Dandi salt march in 1930, which led to India’s independence in 1947.

The British salt tax in colonial India forced nationals to produce salt and pay additional tax at the same time. Using non-violent methods, Ghandi petitioned the British government to allow Indian citizens to produce salt without paying any tax. Ghandi’s humanitarian work gradually brought India to its independence.

A national holiday had been declared in India as a reminder of what Ghandi had done. It had been named Ghandi Jayanti Day. In memory of Ghandi, the world has declared an International Day of peace in his name. This is a real hero of the twenty-first century.

Another well-known hero is Martin Luther Ling. Jr. This hero is the iconic figure who led the African Civil Rights Movement. He used non-violent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Ghandi, to stop discrimination against Africans. His goal was to create a colour blind society so that everyone could live in peace and harmony regardless of language, religion and colour.

Women have also become very well known heroes, or should I say, heroines. This heroine is none other than our very own Mother Tresa. She has spent 45 altruistic years caring for the poor and sick. She took great care for orphans and forgotten elderly. Mother Tresa led missionaries in India, and later spread her influence to the rest of the world. At the point of her death, she had successfully founded 610 missionaries in 123 countries; she even won a Nobel Prize for her great humanitarian work. This heroine is remembered even today. Amelia Earheart is another of the world’s greatest heroines.

She helped women to have equal rights as men. Amelia Earheart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also as outstanding writer, and wrote man books on her flying experience. Amelia Earheart petitioned for the rights of women, and founded the Equal Rights Amendments. She is the reason why males and females are now looked upon equally. In conclusion, there are many heroes and heroines among us. Some of whom have passed away, yet their influence still remains. Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Tresa are examples of these heros of the twenty-first century.
