Four Forms of Discourse

In the first of this, exposition, the intention is to explain something: for instance, to make some idea clear to the reader, to analyze situation, to define a term, to give directions. The intension, in short, is to inform. One of the four major forms of discourse, in which something is explained or “set forth” EXAMPLE: Outdoor Education remains my favorite field trip of all time due to all of the memorable activities we experienced. For instance, I was able to touch and hold a wide variety of animals that I had never seen until I visited their science center.

One animal was a blue tongue skink that reminded me of leather because it was dry and smooth. The chinchilla was also smooth, yet its fur was also the softest that I had ever felt. This goes to show that one can find similarities in unusual places. I would have never guessed that a reptile and a mammal would have anything in common, but their bodies were pleasing to the touch in different ways.

In addition, I also was able to scale great heights when I visited the high ropes course deep in the forest. Once I had my safety harness and helmet, I surged upward on ladders and nets.The nets were not as challenging as the balance beam which turned out to be my favorite because of the patience and determination that were needed. I realize now that even something difficult can be fun. I hope to use this thought in other areas of my life because now I might achieve even more than before.

Finally, I loved splashing around Lake Peters in the canoe with my partner. A child has to feed, clean up after, brush, and exercise the pet. Another great advantage of having a pet from the pound is the price of these cute and cuddly animals. Pets from the pound cost only a few dollars while pets at a fancy pet store can cost hundreds of dollars. Once you adopt a pet from the Animal Rescue League, it will quickly become a part of your family.If you are thinking of adopting a pet, you might consider choosing a dog or a cat. Dogs and cats can bring lots of happy times to a family, and they can be excellent companions for a person who lives alone or someone who has lost a loved one. Dogs are also a wonderful source of protection. Cats are funny, and they may help to calm people down when they are sad or mad. Please consider adopting an animal. If you remember all of the advantages of adopting a pet from the pound, you might find the bird, mouse, hamster, dog, or cat of your choice. . Description In description, the intention is to make the reader as vividly aware as possible of what the writer has perceived through his senses (or in imagination), to give the reader the “feel” of things described, the quality of a direct experience. The thing described may be anything that we can grasp through the senses, a city street, the face of a person, the sound of a voice, the odor of an attic, a piece of music. EXAMPLE: My friend Marilyn My best friend Marilyn is a very nice girl whom I have known for ten years.One of the reasons why I like her so much is that she has such a nice appearance. She has beautiful long blonde hair and she has a nice haircut, too. Her big blue eyes are like a deep ocean. With her physical appearance, she looks like a movie star. Also, the freckles on her face make her so cute. They remind me of my aunt who passed away a few years ago. Secondly, I like her character a lot. Although she is so young, she has already visited ten countries so far and she likes bringing souvenirs from these countries. As you can see, there are so many reasons why I like her so much. I hope we will be friends forever. 4. Narration Is the kind of discourse concerned with action, with events in time, with life in motion. It answers the question “What happened? It tells a story. As we use the word here, a story is a sequence of events historically true or false — so — fictional or non-fictional — presented that the imagination grasps the action. In narration, the intention is to present an event to the reader-what happened and how it happened. The event itself may be grand or trivial, a battle or a ball game; but whatever it is, the intention is to give the impression of movement in time, to give the sense of witnessing an action. EXAMPLE: The totem pole My grandparent’s house was a magical place for me when I was a little girl.There was an amazing loft where I could spy down on my brothers, a smelly chicken coop to visit every morning to check for fresh eggs, a wonderful swing in a gigantic, old maple tree and a tall black totem pole on the front steps. The totem pole had always fascinated me and I love to stare into the black eyes of the thunderbird at the top and wonder what he was thinking. I enjoyed running my small hands over the chiseled black wood and marveling that the carver had included details such as eyes, wings and even feathers. However, it was the thunderbirds noise that intrigues me the most.His long black beak stuck out from the totem pole and had to carved nostrils at the curved end. The nostrils were curious black holed that tempted me. One day I cautiously poked my finger into the thunderbirds nostril, not sure how far I would go. I suddenly felt a sharp sting and I screamed as I yanked my finger out. Not only had I poked my finger into the nose of thunderbird, but also right into the back end of a bumble bee. Whenever I see stately totem, now on my parents’ front steps, I remember what a painful and embarrassing way it was for me to learn to “keep my fingers to myself”.
