In “Bassackwards: Construction Spanish and Other Signs of the Times,” by Jay Nordlinger, delivers a message to Native Americans and immigrants who speak many different languages. This message states that in America, English must be used as the only common and official language. Jake Jamieson redelivers the same message in his writing “The English-Only Movement,” Government, companies, or bosses at construction jobs. As Nordlinger describes, America nowadays faces a challenge of keeping English the only official language.
Spanish has become a language that presents a challenge to English in America’s “contemporary life.
” “I trust that Americanization will sometime kick in… But if it doesn’t, we will lose a lot,” said Nordlinger. His message was a warning to English speakers that other languages, Spanish in particular, are invading the Americans’ mother tongue. He strongly suggests that construction workers should learn English instead of knowing only to speak Spanish between each other and their bosses. He believes that they signed up for that.
The deal was, you came to America and you assimilated into the culture,” said Nordlinger. But, as immigrants, do they have to adopt the American culture to learn its language? The same way, Jamieson gives English and its native speakers one option to keep it as the only common and official spoken language in America. He suggests that America should support people who fight to keep the right of their mother language to stay the absolute common and official language in their land. The author does not see America as one culture-country, yet he sees it with one official and common language: English.
It would be hard to defend the argument that there is only one culture in the United States,” he said. He agrees to have more than one culture in the United States, and he disagrees to have another language, other than English, in it that considered more than a private language. Still, jamieson, believe that some people take it, somehow, far when they argue that native Americans likes the idea of ” official-English legislation,” and this is the way it should be, as an example from the text, the “conservative” attorney David Price.
The author finds it scary to see this idea is getting bigger in some areas, particularly, in areas where many “Spanish-speaking” people live. Although, both authors arguing to keep English the only “official” language in their country, Nordlinger attacks the ” survival Spanish” as if it’s a vine plant climbing up his tree,”…. , America included English,” he yelled. I prefer that there should be one official language, which is English. However, I cannot see a reason to force immigrants to use it.
Jamieson was offers a better solution to solve such linguistic conflicting issue. This solution suggests that all states should make English their “official language” and convey immigrants to learn it. He mentions some states that are already doing so, such as Florida, and Virginia, etc. We learn from this text that English and English only, may stand alone in this country to maintain its importance as the only official spoken language nationwide. If you choose to live in America then u shall learn its language (English), at least enough to make it in this opportunity-country.
