The company was founded by two brothers, Benjamin and Max Goldberg. Strategic Hospitality is a Nashville based hospitality company owned by brothers Max and Benjamin Goldberg. “They claim to be responsible for helping shape the city of Nashville’s dining landscape by continuously introducing innovative, one-of-a-kind concepts. It all began after Max Goldberg graduated as an honors student from the University of Denver. He was a double major in Business Management and Economics. Max received the University’s highest honor, The Pioneer Award, after being Student Body President. This award is given to students who go above and beyond to contribute to the campus. He now returns to Denver every year to lecture at the Pioneer Leadership Series.

Max later moved to New York City to work for The Dilenschneider Group and then to Ruder Finn; both strategic consulting firms located in midtown Manhattan. It wasn’t until 2006 that he fully embraced his passion in the hospitality business when he left New York for his hometown to partner with his brother Benjamin.

Founded In December 2006, Benjamin Goldberg created Strategic Hospitality. The company has since grown to employ more than 400 people. Ben and Max carry a lot of pride for Nashville as they are Natives and have interconnected themselves to what is happening in the city. “ Ben and Max also sit on the boards of both the Rochelle Center and the University School of Nashville. They are also members of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization and Leadership Nashville for the class of 2014-2015” (Fox, Elizabeth).

In 2011, Max was named as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30. In 2016, the Nashville Business Journal named Max as a 40 under 40 award winner. In the same year, Nashville Lifestyles named him as a Nashville Influencer. The Goldberg brothers’ nomination for the 2015 and 2016 James Beard Foundation Awards for Outstanding Restaurateur attests to their entrepreneurial drive, innovative ideas, and focus on exceptional customer service within each of their establishments.

Although Strategic Hospitality is the leading performer within Hospitality in Nashville, M Street is one of the companies greatest competitors. M Street is the Parent company to Virago, Citizen, Whiskey Kitchen, Kayne Prime, Tavern, Moto Cucina + Enoteca, Saint Anejo, and The Rosewall. Similar to Strategic Hospitality, they are “readily identifiable with exceptional quality, consistency, hospitality, and innovation” (Press). The trendy companies are both share a great amount of hospitality and are profitable. One may attain deeper knowledge from taking a closer look at the many areas of management.

Both companies demonstrate great management performance by prioritizing an authentic guest experience, genuine customer service and outstanding food quality. M Street has been reviewed in 45+ articles by media outlets such as THRILLIST, EATER Nashville, Nashville Lifestyles and more. The articles praised various properties emphasizing on their food such as brunch, steak and sushi (Press). Strategic Hospitality has been reviewed by hundreds of media outlets such as Forbes, BRAVO, Nashville Business Journal, Nashville Scene and more (Max Goldberg, 29). These articles focused more on the overall experience. For example, the BRAVO article recommended Strategic Hospitality property, Pinewood Social as a must for a girls weekend getaway.

As a former employee of Strategic Hospitality, Marissa can confidently say that Max and Ben personally make an effort to create a welcoming and memorable environment for both customers and employees. When Marissa was first employed, Max and Ben held an orientation to introduce themselves and myself to the team. They discussed their mission, passion, character and hopes. They made it clear we were not just “servers” but hosts for guests to have an unforgettable experience. They made the newcomers excited and happy to be a part of the team and a thriving business. After doing some research on the team at M Street, we found that Hyndman, CEO/Founder was sued by former executive chef at Virago for discrimination.

Overall, both companies are reputable for their success and fine dining. But, it is apparent that Strategic Hospitality leads the industry as they dominate not only food quality, but guest experience. Strategic Hospitality is by far sustainable and will continue to expand properties and profit, benefiting Nashville and the company itself.
