Bill Gates once said, “It’s fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” And while I do enjoy ‘[celebrating my] success’, I always make sure that I address my wrongdoings first and overcome them as soon as possible. Throughout my life I have overcome several challenges, yet I continue to earn stellar grades and am currently at the top of my class. I deserve this scholarship because I have the strength and determination to attain my dreams, no matter what gets in my way.
Growing up, I was always passionate about being the best I could be. In school, that meant reading above my grade level. At home, that meant being the glue for a slowly dissolving marriage. I had to do whatever I could to keep my parents together for as long as possible. However, as with most battles, I lost mine. My parents divorced and I saw my perfect family disappear before my eyes.
For my brother, that resulted in a drastic decline in grades. For me, that meant that I had to truly be the best student possible. From then on, getting straight A’s and tutoring others was my normal.
As I entered high school, I was determined to try out a variety of clubs. FFA initially caught my interest and allowed me to discover my dream career: engineering. While attending the State FFA Convention I met a paper engineering professor. She showed me a piece of laminate flooring and told me that paper engineers were responsible for making it.
While that may seem boring to most teens, it was incredibly interesting to me and confirmed my suspicion: I wanted to be an engineer.
Once I entered into my junior year I knew that I needed to get a head start on my engineering career. Therefore, I decided to begin a college pathway and join Upward Bound. Through the program I have taken part in an internship at Jacob’s Engineering and participated in a cultural enrichment trip, which allowed me to gain insight on the college admissions process.
As I begin my senior year, I am working to finish the final three classes of my pre-associate’s in science pathway. I have completed a total of eight college courses thus far and hope to complete many more throughout high school. As a female entering the engineering field, I am certainly in the minority. This endowment will bring me one step closer to changing that though.
Why do I deserve this scholarship? Because I have the determination that the engineering community truly needs. With my education, I can engineer new processes that will give future generations the best chance at living a happy life on Earth. This scholarship will not only get me through college, but it will also allow engineering to evolve further than ever before. I appreciate the consideration and I hope to one day be able to say that I earned a scholarship from the Mensa Foundation.
