Media Literacy and its Influence

Media Literacy is something not everyone has but should Media literacy is being able to read and understand what people say and do in any sort of media. Such as, the Internet, newspaper television shows. As children. we are exposed to media very early on. We read books, watched the news and we all probably had a show that we loved. As a child, I loved Clifford. Clifford was about a huge dog and as a child I thought dogs could get that big.

That is a prime example of being media illiterate media impacted me as a child and it still does today by distorting my views on news and real-life situations. As I said before, I watched Clifford, a show by a huge, red, talking dogs as a naive child, I thought dogs could be bright red, talk and be 25 feet tall. As I grew up and started going to school, I realized that it was not true. Another show I watched as a child is Dragon Tales.

This show was about to children.

They had a rock that they could both hold together and chant and saying and it would transpon them into a magical dragon world. This dragon world was full of friendly, talking dragons This show also distorted my reality as child because I thought if me and one of my siblings could find a magical rock and chant the saying that they said in the show we would be transported into a mystical. magical land of talking dragons.

It is comical thinking about it now. I received my first mobile phone when I was 13 years of age It was not a smartphone so I could not get on the internet or google anything. The phone was given to me for the purpose of emergency in case something happened to me or my siblings when my mom was at work. My first smart phone was about a year after that.

It was slide keyboard phone and I loved it I did not spend much time on it because I had no friends, but now that I’m an adult I have a Samsung phone. My weekly usage came out be around 20 hours. Most of that time I spent on YouTube(5hrs), Google(3hrs) and a game that I like playing(2,5hrs). I used messaging app a lot and I checked my Gmail a lot too. Social Media is a great tool people who want to connect with their loved ones from far away or for business to grow and expand Social media is abused, howevert People bully and hurt each other. They say things that they would not really say if they were face-to-face. Being on a social media platform requires a special skill of media literacy. Others with post things that could go two different directions Such as a political statement. Some people will agree, and some will just argue because they want to.

When I had a Facebook account I would post something, and I would forget to be specific and careful with my words. My post would offend my family members and I would not mean to. So, for me, I believe that social media is not for everyone, because not everyone can not get offended at everything someone says. Having media literacy is very imponant for anyone apart of society. We do not want a president or a governor to be naive like we were when we were children. We learn that they things we thought were true when were kids are false because of education. We learn to differentiate between the truth and a lie when we start going to school Media literacy is very important for all of us to get along and to understand and gather information correctly.
