In this era of fast-growing technology, has social media really taken over our privacy? Moreover, is social media really a private matter? Well the answer to these questions may be arguable but let me provide my insight to this topic. Well, what is privacy? Privacy is closing your curtains when getting ready for bed. Privacy is meeting your doctor behind the closed doors. While in real life, this type of privacy comes naturally, in the digital world the idea of privacy is skewed or distorted.
As we all know, nowadays, people of all the ages use social media but social media is usually and mostly used by the ages of 18-24 years and the most popular sites are FB, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. Social media networking sites back to the 20th century were created as means to communicate with your near and dear ones.
However, I believe that it seems to have been deviated from its actual purpose of invention. Social media is really decreasing our personal privacy as everything has an advantageous as well as a disadvantageous side.
Teens share a wide information about themselves, indeed the sites are designed in such a way that they encourage the user to share their personal privacy. It is found by a site “Pew Research Center” that social media is wide spread which is rising user concerns about privacy. Some people may disagree. They may say that it makes us aware about what’s going around the world and we don’t have any problem in sharing and we enjoy doing that.
An article on “Bull Guard” states about an incident which occured in May 2011. They briefed about how social media research company named Nielsen Co, scrapped all messages off “PatientsLike Me’s” online forum, where they talked regarding their emotional issues in what they thought was safe, but it wasn’t.
I also feel like that there is a huge risk of leakage of personal data on social media.Although one might argue that they find social media a platform to connect to their near and dear ones. People enjoy sharing information about themselves but they have no idea that this can harm them and they can be a target to someone. Also, people are forgetting that facebook has also been leaking public data to the advertisers who then target individuals without the users having any idea about this says Bng.com. The scariest part about this is that the CEO, Mark Zuckenberg and his company is at fault for breaching public privacy.
Well, people should understand that sharing personal privacy can lead them to trouble. Not only saving and protecting your privacy would save you from people with wrong intentions but it will also let you use your account without any stress. People should take precautions and should take care of their privacy as it is a private matter. Especially teens should be careful as they are targeted the most
