Reasons for US Support for Israel:
Sympathy – Jewish survivors of Nazi concentration camps.
US-large Jewish population forced the government to support Israel.
US felt Israel was a close firm friend in a troubled part of the world/knew that Russia was arming Egypt/Syria.
Examples of US Support for Israel:
War of 1948-49:
Financial aid from the US allowed Israelis to irrigate/cultivate a large amount of the desert.
US and American Jews sent $1000 million a year to Israel.
Industries were built.
Big areas of desert were irrigated.
Israel became richer, more modern, and able to spend a lot on armed forces for defense.
Yom Kippur War- 1973:
US sent arms to Israel.
Stepped in when Israelis crossed the Suez Canal.
US hoped to stop Israel from attacking Cairo/Damascus – worried that Russian troops would be brought in.
Met with Russian leader and demanded a ceasefire together.
