Aside from pain, nothing makes us more human than our constant need for nourishment: for food and drink. Come to think of it, it is funny how we spend our lives rushing through our education in order to slaving over work in order to make ends meet, to provide for our own hungers and thirsts, as well as for the ever-growing needs of our respective families.

And the biggest irony of it all is that as long as we are alive, we will always be hungry and thirsty; hence, the vicious cycle of work-to-eat and eat-to-work in an attempt to be free, albeit momentarily, from our physical hunger and thirst.

Please dont get me wrong: working is not bad per se; on the contrary, it provides us with the means to honest living and food on our tables.

But, human as we are, we always have the tendency to blur the lines between working for a living and living to work. Because of the hustle and bustle of commercialized city life, because of trying to be free from the anxiety of how and where to earn money for our daily needs, we have come to forget that our hearts are in need of nourishment as well. In prioritizing work, we make our stomachs our new golden calf, our new idol.

Heres a fun fact: God does not reside in the stomach; He lives in our hearts.

Bad news: we lose sight of everything else when we lose sight of God. It comes as no surprise that even if we try our best in all we do, sooner or later, we get tired because it seems that what we are doing doesnt seem to get us anywhere nearer what we truly desire. And when we reach the rock bottom of our careers, it is only then that we look up to the sky and, like the Prodigal Son, realize that we threw our pearls to pigs  that we wasted Gods grace in order to make a quick buck: instant gratification. But heres the good news: Jesus took upon Himself all our thirsts our frustrations at home, our stress at work, our desires for genuine friendship and a happy family, and most especially our deep-seated longing for Him.

When Jesus said I thirst, He means that He alone can satisfy us. He means that we are invited to come to Him, the true Life-giving water. He means that we no longer have to thirst as long as we make Him our only desire.

This does not guarantee that we will no longer have our own physical needs and other wants; Jesus is not saying that. The main point is that everything we do in order to satisfy our desires must always be directed to God. Jesus said that if we seek His Kingdom and His righteousness, everything else will be given. (Mt. 6:33) Hence, if we remember that our sole purpose for living is to hunger for God, then all our activities will be fruitful in His own time.

If, at this point, you are asking yourself what you truly desire or what you are thirsty for, then you are asking the wrong question. The correct question is this: who do you thirst for? Who do you most deeply desire? Your life depends on your response.
