How To Define Your Strengths And Weaknesses

Personal Leadership Evaluation

Leadership is how a person influences, inspires, motivates, and directs other employees’ daily activities to meet goals set for a group or organization. As an active leader, providing the organization is operating and maintaining efficiency, while keeping the employees motivated and influenced in the tasks they are to perform is an essential key to the organization’s success. ‘Not only influences a major factor in being a successful leader from the research and field experience, but identification of four universal promises of leadership are:

  1. Set the right direction and create meaningful work
  2.  Engage stakeholders and hold them accountable for performance
  3. Ensure that processes and systems facilitate focus and execution
  4. Lead effectively through maintaining relationships of trust to achieve and sustain desired results,’ (Adams & Anderson, 2016, ‘Four Universal Promises of Leadership’).

The importance of understanding weaknesses and strengths is a factor to consider when looking at the aspects and areas of improvement of leadership. The proof of how capable of a leader a person is shows a reflection through the development and the different changes that are in consideration.

Weaknesses in Leadership Evaluation

There are several weaknesses that I see while taking the assessment. One is that fact that I am a passive person who tries to avoid conflicts and does not like to appear as though I am wrong or not sure about something in a specific situation. I require a sense of belonging with some direction and approval for performances, as well as prefer to listen and observe others around me to process their opinions and the differences made.

To contribute to the sense of belonging, I seek direction from others or aim to please others by performing tasks requested.

The weaknesses I have currently would not put me in a healthy and active leadership position as I cannot motivate others to complete their tasks. However, I do possess a desire to learn and excel in functions I perform to the best of my ability. The accomplishment of my best work is when under pressure, but not within a group setting and put in an uncomfortable situation. Also, a reflection of weakness is the ability to openly bring up or further discuss cases that are difficult or uncomfortable.

There is plenty of room for me to grow and improve to enhance my leadership skills, however, find it difficult to accomplish when opportunities are not present. Though I do not prefer to receive credit for positive outcomes, I do feel as though I require it to ensure the work performed was acceptable. The requirement for approval is a hindrance factor because to succeed the ability to take charge and innovate is essential, and that is how other people learn and grow from your knowledge. ‘Creation of work that reflects the meaning and positively and effectively communicating with other direct contacts, including outside sources is how a leader sets the context and creates the conclusions in which individuals and organizations thrive,’ (Adams & Anderson, 2016, Chapter 1).Weaknesses are a reflection of opportunities for improvements, as well as permit additional positive outcomes through the extensive drive for a change in leadership abilities.

Strengths in Leadership Evaluation

Leadership is a continually changing and  growing role, which requires continuous development to remain productive and relevant to the changing business environments. According to Adams and Anderson (2016), leaders who commit to the improvement of performances understand their strengths and weaknesses, while admitting they are not perfect (Chapter 1). Having an open mind and a willingness to learn, improve, and enhance self-performances is a characteristic that is a representation of my strength as a leader. With the desire to continue to learn and grow is an important feature to reflect the openness and transparent person that I am enjoys interactions with other people.

Though I have some issues with releasing the past conflicts, however, it is essential to bring others with similar viewpoints and line of sight provides the ability to ensure strategic corporate goals are in alignment, all while personal values are carried forward to ensure the views and intentions are transparent and remain efficient, and work as effectively as possible (Films Media Group, 2010). Weaknesses tend to be more difficult to overcome over enhancing strengths that already exist. The characteristics that are my strongest point are honesty, creativity, and commitment, which will assist with the continuities’ of motivating the company’s successes for years into the future. All it takes is the willingness to listen and keeps the eyes open for change opportunities to improve self-worth and the organization.

Development Plan

The first step to overcome weaknesses is to seek alternatives such as training for improvement, as well as determine how to focus more on the strengths, which using them to improve my weaknesses. The Pencak (2018) website states that there is not a single person who is perfect, and to overcome this understanding is through the knowledge of the strengths you possess and maximize on them.  The majority of the leaders know their experience and knowledge, as well as where to go to areas they fall short of knowledge. My development plan is an acknowledgment to not focus so much on the weaknesses while preparing for the future where I may fall short.

Collective leadership and other relationships are essential, so you can enhance your personal experience where there are weaknesses in their expertise. Second in my plan is to understand the strengths I possess and they can help me. Pencak (2018), ‘an understanding of strengths can be made clearer through three questions: The first question is: What am I good at? A second question is what are your core strengths? The third question is: Where should my focus be?,’ (Step 2: Understand Your Strengths).

Understanding all answers to these three questions will ensure there is not a waste in time usage, and that positive energy is spent on a task that has greater importance. The view and understanding of my weaknesses and strengths allow for visualization of possibilities, especially when taking into account the potentials that I have. ‘Focusing on strengths, core values, and knowing how to overcome weaknesses will maximize progress while thinking regarding progress, not perfection,’ (Pencak, 2018).

Rationale

Collectively operating at the rational level of mastery of leadership determines how high one must reach to be successful through the Promise of Leadership effectiveness. To ensure implicit and explicit are met, the leader should enhance their competencies. To break it down a little further, the commitment to personal development is just as significant as it is to the people one leads. As capabilities improve leaders will become more active, which lead to the knowledge of an exceptional leader will know and understand their weaknesses and is willing to work to strengthen those weaknesses, as well as having the honesty to themselves and those around them that they influence. Leadership that is competent and authentic creates trust and credibility with themselves, and their followers will establish a reciprocating relationship.

Effective leaders anticipate that others perceive them as humans who are prone to mistakes. When leaders express their weaknesses is a reflection of the ability to continue to learn and grow with their knowledge and leadership skills. ‘Credibility is earned with time and experience; grace is granted to be human,’ (Adams & Anderson, 2016, Chapter 2). Leaders who are conscious of potential changes or issues lead to progression and ensure that the problems are temporary and may not always have a direct negative impact on the organization.

Conclusion

This paper’s purpose is a reflection of the leadership style I possess, as well as the clarity of the kind of leader I could be, and what strengths and weaknesses I have from my perspective as a potential future leader. I hope after reading this, there is clarity of the visualization of my strengths and weaknesses, and how I have perceived them. Some of the best leaders know the promises to adhere to, manage those expectations, and implement those promises. Leaders take the pledges and turn them into actions creating an inspirational culture that follows the organization’s values, ethics, beliefs, and contributions (Adams & Anderson, 2016, Chapter 2). No matter the strength or weakness, each has room for improvements and focuses on the maintenance of effective leadership qualities. The rationale of my observances is a reflection of my understandings of research and clarification of my strengths and weaknesses.

Changes in life, business, and technology are inevitable. Having a clear and concise understanding of what the future may hold, and how to establish and maintain essential relationships can enhance trust and competence throughout the organization. Taking a vision and turning it into reality through the direction of others is the way to become a leader.
