In the short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, by Flannery O’Connor, the grandmother is very interesting. She is a true Southern belle! She is always dressed to impress and thinks that she is superior to everyone else in her family, She is clearly the protagonist in the story, because she is always in the midst of family drama. Although she is loved and looked up to by her family, the grandmother is often the cause of much hostility in the family.
The grandmother is a pretty static character because she keeps the same persona throughout the story. Whenever something does not go how she wants it to go, she tries to change it. One situation is when her son Bailey was planning a trip to Florida that she did not want to go on She never says it directly, but she keeps bugging him about the trip In this example she tries to scare him away by bringing up criminal reports.
Just you read it I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that a loose in it, Manipulation at its best! Everyone seems to have the same opinion about the grandmother. They think that she is a ” know it”. There are several instances where this is proven. there is one incident when she is in the car going on the way to Mississippi and Bailey’s wife had on pants. She immediately goes off on her and criticizes the way she dresses.
The grandmother thinks that women are always supposed to be dressed to impress and always look their best. Her family constantly tells her that times are changing and society runs differently now. She cannot fathom that she is wrong; so even though she knows that she is dead wrong, there is no turning back from there she will argue her point until everyone is tired of her.
