The film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, also allowed me to apply what I knew towards what it meant to be an artist within a particular context, as demonstrated through Banksy’s attempts of inspiring a cultural movement through his artwork (Apple Inc.

2010). An artist, as portrayed throughout the film, utilizes a sense of creative articulation towards a piece of artwork that they can successfully communicate with others on. Through this, by doing so, an artist can also express themselves in a way that also unites others together through a sense of artistic expression. This further allows others to interpret a piece of artwork more fully, by means of the emotional connection drawn upon by the artist.

Ultimately, as driven from the film itself, art surrounds the exploration of one’s interests and passion by means of portraying themselves within a particular piece they wish to create.

The movie also changed my perspective on street art, as a result of the actions that surrounded Thierry Guetta, a French filmmaker, who, after being challenged by Banksy to become a street artist instead, makes his own art show that attracts much publicity throughout the city of Los Angeles and beyond (Apple Inc. 2010).

Thierry, after putting up street art six months later, and compiling a production team to create various pieces of artwork under his supervision, further redefines what street art represents. In my opinion, after regarding street art in light of its ability to allow for artists to express themselves freely through a piece of work, I believe that Thierry lost sight of what street art can be used for, becoming too concerned with the value and commercialization that came from his successes.

Furthermore, as exemplified by the film, art can be defined as a means of encompassing a diverse range of human expression, creativity, and unity that can be used to convey a particular message within the lives of others (Apple Inc. 2010). Although my definition of what it means to be an artist has not changed, I do possess a new understanding in the value of creative expression outside of the mainstream of the art market itself. In allowing for a diverse audience to connect emotionally with one another, I consider artistic expression as a process of guidance that can lead us towards a deeper level of emotional interpretation and self-discovery.

Thus, through the meaningful relationships that we may drive from perceiving art in its various forms, we begin to focus our attention on its value within our lives, and how creativity can be inspired by an artist who wishes to highlight their sense of individualism further.
