Through the Bb learn module, I learned that academic integrity entails conducting oneself in a responsible manner, trustworthy manner, fair, and being honest. Other than conducting yourself using the set pillars, academic integrity is meant to ensure that knowledge is developed while at the same time students are expected to work with one another and also trust one another. According to the module, the best way to avoid academic integrity issues and instead promote it is through the promotion of an honest behavior in various aspects.
In this case, one should avoid fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism which are cited as the most common ways through which academic integrity is violated. However, although the focus of academic integrity is on positive behavior, a focus on negative behavior entails the absence of integrity. In the situation when integrity is absent, conversation and focus shifts from integrity to suspicion which is contrary to growth, respect, and trust.
The critical pillar that is used as a foundation for all the other pillars is honesty which is often regarded as sincerity.
For honesty to prevail, individuals have to take stock of their fair effort and also consider their abilities. Trust which is the second pillar aims at reinforcing the manner in which individuals operate and the connection between students. Trust is built through proper working under structures that are fair. Fairness and trust are inseparable. A comparison of what I learned in the module and what I made as the first statement shows that there is a slight difference.
In the first statement, I thought that academic integrity only entails avoiding plagiarism and cheating in academics. However, I have realized that there are more pillars to academic integrity than just plagiarism and honesty.
There are several things that I liked about academic integrity in Bb learn module. First, I like the emphasis that academic integrity is a holistic concept that encompasses more than one aspect. Secondly, I liked the fact that the module gives you information regarding academic integrity and by reading through the text, one gets tips on how to avoid violating academic integrity. I also like the fact that based on the manner the contents are arranged, it is easy to tell that academic integrity has a connection to the character or personality of an individual. It is evident that honest individuals will have an easy time complying with the requirements of academic integrity while others will grapple with a myriad of issues. I also like the fact that based on the tips that are offered in the module, as one struggles to conform with the requirements of academic integrity, it can end up transforming an individual’s character and personality.
There are many ways in which the contents in Bb learn can be improved and made more effective. Just as I stated in the section above, it is possible to point out the pillars of academic integrity. However, all readers are not empowered to detect and pinpoint out rightly the points that are being discussed in the module. I would, therefore, suggest the reorganization of the contents so that each pillar can be handled independently of the other. This arrangement would increase the clarity of the points. Another way that I would suggest improvement is the use of diagrams. A single diagram summarizes many words, and therefore, if the contents can be organized in such a way that diagrams are included explaining the various concepts, it would promote further clarity of the contents.
